    Edition recap

swop 2025: A Decade of Growth Sets the Stage for interpack China

The Shanghai World of Packaging (swop) successfully concluded its landmark tenth-anniversary edition on November 27, 2025, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). Held across five halls (N1-N5) and spanning over 70,000 square meters, swop 2025 hosted 950 exhibiting companies from China, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Turkey, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and other countries and regions.

Over the three-day event, 43,090 trade visitors and buyers from 122 countries and regions attended to source solutions and conduct business — a significant 30% year-on-year increase. The 17.5% share of international attendees underscored the event's growing global appeal.

The exhibition was strategically centered on the core themes of 'Disruptive Innovation,' 'Global Vision,' and 'Cross-Sector Integration.' Four key areas were featured: fostering an immersive innovation ecosystem to help the industry overcome key challenges; adopting a global vision for international market expansion; offering a curated, buyer-centric experience for specific production pain points; and highlighting innovative packaging materials for functionality and sustainability.

Special zones included the Industry Pain-Point Tracks, the Packaging Performance Challenge, the Scenario-driven Solutions Zone, and the International Breakthrough Innovation Showcase, providing hands-on insights into intelligent manufacturing, sustainable materials, and digital transformation.

The concurrent Save Food (China) Forum, co-organized by Messe Düsseldorf, WPO, FAO China, and UNIDO, addressed global strategies to reduce food loss and waste and honored six companies with the Save Food Design Award and the Sustainability Design Award.

Key market insights, trends, news and related events to help you understand the bigger picture.

Asia-Pacific (with global interpack alliance network context)

    Why it matters

interpack China 2026 matters because it arrives at an inflection point for both the global packaging industry and the Asia-Pacific region. The China packaging market is valued at approximately USD 229 billion in 2026 and projected to reach USD 291 billion by 2031, driven by the world's largest e-commerce ecosystem, an aggressive national green-manufacturing agenda, and a 2026 to 2030 Packaging Industry Development Plan that prioritises digitalisation and low-carbon transformation. Simultaneously, regulatory pressures from the EU's PPWR and EPR frameworks are reshaping export market access for Chinese and Asian manufacturers, while raw-material volatility and skilled-labour shortages are forcing operational changes. For buyers and exhibitors, interpack China 2026 provides a single venue to source flexible automation for high-mix low-volume orders, evaluate biodegradable and paper-based alternatives, find practical compliance guidance for overseas expansion, and connect with the global interpack alliance's network spanning Shanghai, Bangkok, Mumbai, Manila, Cairo and Riyadh. As the Shanghai successor to swop, the event inherits a decade of audience data and brand recognition while adding global alliance resources, making it the most efficient gateway to the Asia-Pacific packaging market in the second half of 2026

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

    Sustainability and Circular Packaging Regulation

Regulatory pressure on packaging waste is accelerating globally. The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes are reshaping export market access for Chinese and Asian manufacturers, driving demand for recyclable, mono-material and bio-based packaging solutions. At interpack China 2026, these compliance themes are central to the programme, with dedicated expert consultation services and a focus on design-for-recycling and closed-loop systems

    Source
    02

AI and Smart Manufacturing in Packaging

Artificial intelligence, IoT and automation are moving from pilot projects to industrial reality across the packaging sector. AI-assisted packaging design, machine-vision inspection, predictive maintenance and intelligent scheduling systems are compressing production cycles and reducing waste. interpack China 2026's Intelligent Packaging Zone will showcase these technologies, including AI-powered X-ray inspection equipment and flexible production lines for high-mix low-volume orders

    Source
    03

    Asia-Pacific Packaging Market Growth

The Asia-Pacific region continues to be the largest and fastest-growing packaging market globally, driven by expanding e-commerce, urbanisation and changing consumer lifestyles. China's packaging market alone is estimated at USD 229 billion in 2026, projected to reach USD 290.74 billion by 2031 at a 4.89% CAGR. The region accounts for a significant share of global packaging machinery demand, with interpack alliance events across Shanghai, Bangkok, Mumbai, Manila, Cairo and Riyadh serving as key sourcing platforms

    Source
    04

Supply Chain Resilience and Regional Sourcing

Geopolitical tensions, tariff changes and pandemic-era disruptions have prompted manufacturers to diversify sourcing and build more resilient supply chains. In the packaging sector, this is driving interest in regional suppliers, multi-source strategies and near-shoring. interpack China 2026's Hosted Buyer Program and International Pavilions address this by connecting regional manufacturers with global technology providers and offering curated sourcing routes

    05

Digital Product Passports and Smart Labels

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are emerging as a key compliance and traceability tool in regulated markets, enabling consumers and regulators to access real-time information on material composition, recycling instructions and product provenance. Smart interactive packaging integrating QR codes, NFC tags and IoT sensors is transitioning from novelty to standard requirement, particularly for pharmaceutical and food applications. interpack China 2026's smart connectivity focus zone addresses these developments

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Business card etiquette

Present and receive business cards with both hands, with the Chinese side facing the recipient. Read the card completely before putting it away. This is a sign of professionalism and respect in Chinese business culture

    Relationship building (guanxi)

In China, building trust (guanxi) often takes multiple touchpoints before a business conversation becomes productive. The Chinese prefer to do business with people they trust. At the exhibition, make friendly conversation with booth visitors before discussing business matters. Exhibitions are for interaction and relationship-building rather than final pricing negotiations

    Face (mianzi) and gift giving

Face (mianzi) is a critical concept in Chinese business culture. Giving face involves granting favours, gift giving, praising and hosting social events. Gifts are an important feature of business in China. When giving a gift, avoid monetary gifts as these may be perceived as manipulative; non-monetary traditional gifts are more appropriate

    Dining and banquets

Business banquets are common in China and are an important part of relationship building. In Shanghai, the drinking culture is generally less intense than in northern China. If you do not drink alcohol, politely declining is acceptable. Toasting is common; if you are toasted, it is polite to reciprocate

Most foreign nationals holding ordinary passports require a visa to enter China for business purposes. An M (business) visa is the standard type for attending trade fairs. However, citizens of 50 countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days for business purposes including exhibitions and trade fairs. Citizens of 54+ countries can also use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit if transiting to a third country. Attendees not covered by these policies should apply for an M visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate

    Decision

    Visit, exhibit, or skip?

    Should you go?

Answer 8 quick questions to find out whether attending, exhibiting or skipping interpack China 2026 is the right decision for your business

    QUESTION 1 OF 8

What best describes your primary role in the packaging and processing industry?

    Decision matrix

Compare participation options side by side to choose the best fit for your objectives.

    visit

You have specific sourcing or research goals, your budget allows for travel and accommodation (estimated USD 1,500–3,000+ depending on origin), and you have at least 4–6 weeks to prepare

    Best for

End-market brand owners, manufacturers, procurement managers and packaging engineers from food, beverage, confectionery, bakery, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, non-food consumer goods and industrial goods sectors who need to source machinery, materials, containers, printing or labelling solutions. Also suited to packaging designers, OEM/ODM companies and e-commerce/logistics operators seeking practical packaging solutions. Ideal for professionals whose priority is evaluating and comparing suppliers in one place

    Min. budget

    $1,500.00

    Timeline

T-45 to T-30: Pre-register online and set up Matchmaker profile. T-21: Book flights and hotel (November is peak trade fair season in Shanghai). T-7: Finalise meeting schedule and download the show floor plan

    Risks

November is peak business travel season in Shanghai — flights and hotels near SNIEC book out early and prices rise significantly

97,000 sqm across five halls is too large to cover in one day — without a pre-planned route you will miss priority exhibitors

International visitors need to verify visa or visa-free eligibility at least 4 weeks before travel

    exhibit

You have confirmed products to showcase, a budget of at least USD 8,000–15,000 for a small booth including all costs, and 3–4 months of lead time to plan properly

    Best for

Packaging and processing machinery manufacturers, packaging material and container producers, printing and labelling companies, automation and smart manufacturing solution providers, and packaging design firms targeting the China and broader Asia-Pacific markets. Particularly suited to companies with products relevant to the show's key themes: smart packaging, paper-based sustainable materials, PPWR/EPR compliance solutions, flexible manufacturing for high-mix low-volume orders, and AI-driven packaging design. International exhibitors benefit from the Hosted Buyer Program and the interpack alliance's global buyer network

    Min. budget

    $8,000.00

    Timeline

T-120 to T-90: Reserve booth space and sign contract (space is allocated on a first-come basis; early booking secures better location). T-90: Submit booth design for approval and order services from the exhibitor manual. T-60: Complete visa applications for all staff travelling to China. T-30: Finalise product displays, samples and marketing collateral. T-14: Confirm staff travel, hotel and on-site logistics

    Risks

Booth costs are significant — shell scheme at approximately EUR 385/sqm for the International Pavilion plus travel, accommodation and logistics for staff

Competition for buyer attention is intense with 970+ exhibitors across five halls — booth design and pre-show marketing are critical

ROI depends heavily on pre-show outreach — exhibitors who rely solely on walk-up traffic report lower returns than those who pre-schedule meetings via Matchmaker

    skip

Your product category falls outside the show's scope, your budget cannot accommodate the trip, or your timeline does not allow adequate preparation

    Best for

Professionals whose target market or product category does not align with the show's eight core end sectors, those with budgets under USD 1,500 who cannot justify the travel cost, or companies with less than 4 weeks of lead time before the event. Also suited to those who have attended recent swop/interpack China editions and found limited new value, or whose primary goal is consumer-facing rather than B2B trade

    Min. budget

    Not yet confirmed

    Timeline

No preparation required. Consider subscribing to the event's e-newsletter for post-show reports and planning for the next edition with more lead time

    Risks

Missing out on the first edition under the interpack China brand, which represents a significant upgrade in international buyer participation

China's packaging market is growing at 4.88% CAGR to USD 290.73 billion by 2031 — delaying engagement may mean ceding ground to competitors who attend

Alternative regional events in Southeast Asia or Europe may offer better value if the Shanghai edition does not align with your priorities
