Small commodities

The Chinese trade category covering low-to-mid unit-price consumer goods - gifts, housewares, stationery, accessories, toys and hardware - that Yiwu is built around. Buyers usually combine many such lines in one sourcing trip rather than a single product family.

MOQ (minimum order quantity)

The smallest order an exhibitor will accept for a given SKU. At Yiwu booths MOQs are frequently quoted per colour or per carton, so ask whether the number is per item, per colourway or per export carton.

Sample fee and sample refund

Many exhibitors charge for physical samples and deduct the fee from the first bulk order. Confirm in writing whether the sample charge is refundable, who pays courier costs, and whether a pre-production sample will be approved before mass production.

OEM vs ODM

OEM means the factory builds to your design and specification; ODM means you buy an existing factory design, optionally with your logo, packaging or colour change. Yiwu suppliers commonly offer ODM with lower MOQs and OEM at higher volumes.

FOB (free on board)

An Incoterm where the supplier delivers goods to a named port (commonly Ningbo or Shanghai for Yiwu factories) and covers export clearance. Compare quotes only when the Incoterm, port and packing standard are identical.

EXW (ex works)

The buyer collects from the factory gate and carries all inland freight, export paperwork and risk. EXW looks cheapest on a quote sheet but usually costs more once Yiwu-to-port trucking and export handling are added.

LCL vs FCL

LCL (less than container load) shares container space and suits test orders and mixed-SKU buying; FCL (full container load) is a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container and becomes cheaper per cubic metre once volumes are large enough.

Consolidation / sourcing agent

A service that receives goods from several Yiwu suppliers, checks quantities and quality, repacks, and ships one combined consignment. Useful when buying many small lines from different booths or market stalls.

Yiwu International Trade City

The vast multi-district wholesale market in Yiwu, organised by product category across separate district buildings. Many fair visitors add market days before or after the show to compare prices against exhibitor quotes and to buy below-MOQ quantities.

Trade-only / buyer badge

Admission issued to business buyers rather than the general public. Expect to show a passport plus company evidence such as a business licence, tax registration, or staff ID and to pre-register online; confirm the current document list with the organiser before travelling.

Pre-registration

Completing buyer details on the organiser website before arrival so a badge can be collected at the venue. It usually shortens on-site queueing but does not replace passport or document checks at the registration counter.

RMB / CNY settlement

Chinese suppliers usually quote and settle in renminbi. Confirm whether the booth price is tax-inclusive, whether a VAT invoice (fapiao) is available for export refunds, and which payment route (bank transfer, Alipay, WeChat Pay) the supplier accepts for deposits.

Fapiao (VAT invoice)

The official Chinese tax invoice. Export buyers who need it for customs or tax purposes should request the 13% VAT special invoice at order stage, because it cannot easily be issued retroactively.

Colour box / display carton

Retail-ready inner packaging (colour box, blister, hangtag) and the outer export carton. Packaging changes are a common hidden cost, so agree artwork, barcode placement and carton drop-test requirements in the order contract.
