    Weather

January 2027 January in Saskatoon is deep winter, with sub-zero temperatures typical; pack for severe cold when travelling to a mid-January show. Check an official Environment Canada forecast close to your travel dates. January is a dry, cold winter month in Saskatoon - snow rather than rain is the main concern, and snow-clearing can affect road travel. Plan extra time for airport transfers and outdoor walking.

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

Prairie winter is the main logistics risk

Mid-January in Saskatoon means deep cold, wind chill and snow. Build buffer time into airport transfers, keep a warm layer for the walk from parking to the halls, and check Environment Canada forecasts daily rather than relying on a forecast made a week earlier.

    Treaty 6 territory

Saskatoon sits on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Metis Nation. Acknowledging this is common practice at local events and public gatherings, and it is useful context if you meet with Indigenous agricultural producers, Tribal Councils or Métis organizations during the show.

    Farm-show conversation style

Prairie growers tend to be direct and practical. Lead with seeding rates, acres, soil tests and this season's rotation rather than corporate introductions, and expect exhibitors to answer with field experience as well as spec sheets.

    Money and sales tax

Prices are in Canadian dollars. Saskatchewan applies 5% GST plus 6% PST on most goods, a combined 11% on many purchases, so quoted booth items, meals and equipment can carry tax on top of the sticker price. Card payment is widely accepted, including at the venue.

    Tipping and service

Restaurant servers, bartenders and taxi drivers typically expect a tip of around 15-20% on the pre-tax bill. Hotel housekeeping tips are optional but customary for multi-night stays.

    Driving and distances

Saskatoon is a car-oriented city and the fairground sits on the south side away from downtown. Distances look short on a map but winter road conditions, bridge traffic over the South Saskatchewan River and snow clearing can add 10-20 minutes to a cross-city trip.

    Business cards and follow-up

Exchange cards or scan badges early in a conversation, and confirm who owns the follow-up. Prairie dealers and agronomists often make purchasing decisions in the weeks right after the show, before spring seeding planning locks in.

    Food, drink and hall breaks

Venue food service during the show is typically concession style, with coffee and quick meals between halls. Downtown Saskatoon has a broader restaurant range if you want a sit-down dinner after the show floor closes.

    FAQs & glossary

    Answers

    Frequently asked

When and where is the Crop Production Show held?
The show runs in mid-January at World Trade Centre Saskatoon in the Prairieland Park district on the south side of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The 2027 edition falls in the same mid-January window used for recent editions; confirm the exact dates on cropproductionshow.com before booking travel.
How much does it cost to attend the Crop Production Show?
Captured ticket tiers list a 1-Day Pass at about CA$22.52, a 2-Day Pass at about CA$36.04 and a 3-Day Pass at about CA$45.05, with GST and PST already included. Prices and on-site versus advance rates can change, so check the organiser's ticket page for the 2027 edition.
Who attends the Crop Production Show?
The audience is dominated by working Prairie crop producers plus the agronomy and ag-retail trade that serves them: certified crop advisers, seed growers, crop input dealers, custom applicators, grain buyers, researchers and farm business owners from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and the northern US plains.
What is exhibited on the show floor?
Exhibits cover canola, cereal and pulse seed and genetics, crop protection and seed treatments, fertilizer and micronutrients, biologicals and inoculants, air drills and seeding equipment, sprayers, combine headers, grain bins, aeration and handling systems, precision ag and guidance, drones, soil testing and agronomy services.
Are seminars and agronomy sessions included with a pass?
The organiser publishes a show schedule at cropproductionshow.com/schedule listing the speaker sessions and hall programming. Check that page for the 2027 lineup and whether the sessions require a separate sign-up or are open to all pass holders.
Which airport serves Saskatoon and how far is it from the venue?
Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport (YXE) is the local gateway, roughly 15 km north of Prairieland Park, or about a 20 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic and winter road conditions. Regina (YQR) is an alternative about 2.5 to 3 hours south by road, and Calgary (YYC) is the main connecting hub for flights into YXE.
How do I reach World Trade Centre Saskatoon from the airport?
Taxi and rideshare are the simplest options from YXE with show materials in tow; Saskatoon Transit buses also connect the airport and downtown to the south-side Prairieland Park district, but usually require a transfer. Check saskatoontransit.ca/plan-my-trip for routes and current fares, and allow extra time in January for snow clearing.
Is parking available at World Trade Centre Saskatoon?
Yes, on-site parking is available at the Prairieland Park fairground. Rates and gate access can change per event, so confirm the daily charge and the hall entrance you need on the organiser or venue website before you drive in.
Which hotels are closest to the venue?
The closest cluster is on the south side near the fairground: Hampton Inn Saskatoon South (about 350 m), Four Points by Sheraton Saskatoon (about 410 m) and Home Inn & Suites by d3h Saskatoon South (about 1.4 km). Downtown Saskatoon hotels are roughly 10 to 15 minutes away by car and work well if you also want restaurants and evening options.
Do I need a visa or eTA to attend from outside Canada?
Most international visitors need either a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly into Canada. US citizens travelling on a valid US passport do not need a visa or eTA for a short business visit. Applying early matters, and the organiser can usually provide an invitation letter if your application asks for proof of purpose.
What is the weather like in Saskatoon in January?
Mid-January in Saskatoon is deep Prairie winter, with daytime highs often well below freezing and overnight lows that can drop far lower, plus wind chill and occasional snow. Pack insulated boots, a heavy parka, gloves and a hat, and plan buffer time for airport transfers and outdoor walking between parking and the halls.
Can I bring a spouse, family member or colleague?
Passes are sold per person as 1-day, 2-day or 3-day tickets, so each guest needs their own ticket. Guest, child and re-entry policies are set by the organiser, so confirm with Prairieland Park or the show office if you plan to bring family or a colleague for a single day.
Is the venue accessible for visitors with mobility needs?
World Trade Centre Saskatoon is a modern trade hall at the Prairieland Park fairground with level hall floors and loading access for large equipment. Contact the organiser in advance about wheelchair routes, scooter availability, accessible parking stalls and any hall-by-hall access restrictions during the show.

    Glossary

    1
    Canola
An oilseed crop bred from rapeseed for low erucic acid and low glucosinolate content, and the highest-value oilseed in Western Canada. Show exhibitors typically split canola offerings across hybrid genetics, seed treatment packages and clubroot-resistant varieties.
    2
    Clubroot
A soil-borne disease of canola and other brassicas caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae that deforms roots and cuts yield. Prairie growers manage it with resistant varieties, longer rotations, sanitation of field equipment and soil testing to map infested patches.
    3
    Fusarium head blight (FHB)
A fungal disease of wheat, barley and oats that bleaches heads and can produce mycotoxins such as DON. Control relies on genetic resistance, crop rotation, residue management and a well-timed fungicide at flowering.
    4
    4R nutrient stewardship
A framework for applying the right nutrient source, at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place. It is widely used on the Prairies to improve fertilizer efficiency and document environmental performance.
    5
    Inoculant
A formulation of rhizobia bacteria applied to pulse and legume seed so the plant can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Inoculant type (peat, granular, liquid) and placement matter for lentil, pea and soybean nodulation.
    6
    Seed treatment
A fungicide or insecticide coating applied to seed before planting to protect the seedling against soil-borne disease and early-season insects. Treatment choices interact with seeding date, soil temperature and rotation history.
    7
    Variable-rate application (VRA)
Applying seed, fertilizer or crop protection at rates that change across a field according to prescription maps. VRA depends on accurate guidance, field data layers and calibrated application equipment.
    8
    Air drill
A seeding implement that meters seed and fertilizer into a moving air stream and distributes it to openers across the width of the tool bar. Air drills dominate Prairie seeding because they cover wide widths quickly in a short seeding window.
    9
    Combine header
The front attachment on a combine that gathers and cuts or picks up the crop, such as a draper header for cereals and canola or a flex header for soybeans. Header choice and setup strongly affect harvest losses.
    10
    Grain aeration
Moving ambient air through a stored grain mass to cool it and even out temperature and moisture. Aeration is the main defence against spoilage and insect activity in on-farm bins through the Prairie winter.
    11
    Growing degree days (GDD)
A heat accumulation measure used to predict crop development stages, maturity timing and pest emergence. Prairie growers compare variety GDD ratings against their local frost-free window when choosing what to seed.
    12
    Herbicide-resistant weeds
Weed populations that survive a herbicide rate that would normally control them, common in kochia, wild oat, cleavers and green foxtail on the Prairies. Management combines multiple modes of action, crop rotation, delayed seeding and mechanical control.
    13
    Pulse crops
Grain legumes grown for dry seed, chiefly lentil, field pea, chickpea and faba bean in Western Canada. They fix their own nitrogen and are a key rotation break for cereal and oilseed disease cycles.

    Biologicals
Products based on living organisms or their derivatives, such as microbial inoculants, biostimulants and biofungicides. They are usually positioned as complements to, not replacements for, conventional crop protection and fertilizer programs.
    15
    Swathing
Cutting a crop and laying it in a windrow to dry and ripen evenly before combining, most often used in canola. Many Prairie growers now straight-cut canola instead, so swathing decisions depend on crop staging and weather.
    16
    Soil test
Laboratory analysis of soil samples, usually taken at a 0-6 inch depth for annual cropping, to measure available nutrients, pH, salinity and organic matter. Results drive fertilizer rates and long-term field planning.
