Tube vs pipe

Both are hollow cylinders, but the trade splits them by specification: pipe is ordered by nominal bore and wall schedule and is used mainly to convey fluids (water, gas, oil, steam), while tube is ordered by outside diameter and wall thickness and covers structural, mechanical, heat-transfer and precision applications such as boilers, heat exchangers, hydraulic lines and furniture frames.

Seamless tube

Tube produced by piercing and elongating a solid billet (rotary piercing, plug mill, pilger or mandrel mill routes) so the body has no weld seam. It is chosen where pressure, temperature and fatigue demands are high, for example boiler tube, heat exchanger tube, hydraulic and instrumentation tube.

Welded tube (ERW and HF-welded)

Tube formed from steel strip or coil that is progressively roll-formed and then closed by electric resistance or high-frequency induction welding, followed by sizing, straightening and cutting. It dominates mass-produced structural, automotive, furniture and conduit tube because it is faster and cheaper than the seamless route.

LSAW and HSAW pipe

Submerged-arc welded line pipe made from plate with a longitudinal (LSAW) or helical/spiral (HSAW) seam. These routes are used for large-diameter oil and gas transmission lines and water mains, where plate quality, seam welding and full-body inspection decide the pressure rating.

OCTG (oil country tubular goods)

Casing, tubing, drill pipe and line pipe used in oil and gas wells, governed by API specifications such as API 5CT and requiring tight dimensional control, premium connections and, for sour service, special steel grades and heat treatment.

Tube mill / roll forming line

The capital equipment at the centre of the tube industry: an integrated line that uncoils strip, forms it through a series of contoured rolls, welds the seam, removes weld bead, sizes and straightens, cuts to length, and can stack or bundle finished tube.

Cold drawing and cold pilgering

Cold reduction of tube over a mandrel or plug to reach tight tolerances, thin walls, a better surface finish and higher strength. Cold-drawn and pilgered tube is standard for precision, instrumentation, hydraulic and bearing applications.

Annealing and bright annealing

Controlled heat treatment that removes work hardening after forming, welding or drawing. Bright annealing in a protective or reducing atmosphere keeps stainless and nickel-alloy tube oxide-free, which matters for heat exchangers, semiconductor lines and hygienic process tube.

NDT (non-destructive testing)

Inspection methods used to prove tube and pipe integrity without cutting the product: eddy current and ultrasonic testing of the weld and body, hydrostatic pressure testing, X-ray or radiographic weld checks, plus dimensional and visual inspection. Eddy current testing is standard on continuous welded tube lines.

Heat exchanger tube

Small-diameter seamless or welded tube in carbon steel, stainless steel, copper alloys, titanium and nickel alloys that carries the process or cooling fluid inside condensers, boilers and shell-and-tube exchangers. Tube-to-tubesheet fit, surface finish and corrosion allowance drive purchasing decisions.

Duplex and super duplex stainless

Two-phase austenitic-ferritic stainless steels with high strength and strong chloride and pitting resistance, widely used for offshore, desalination, chemical and pulp-and-paper tube. Welding procedures and heat treatment control are critical because the phase balance governs corrosion performance.

Wire rod

Hot-rolled round steel coil, usually 5.5 to 16 mm diameter, supplied in low, medium and high carbon and in alloy and stainless grades. Wire rod is the feedstock for wire drawing, fasteners, springs, welding wire, tyre bead and cable armouring.

Wire drawing

Reducing wire rod or intermediate wire through carbide or diamond dies, with lubricant and sometimes multi-pass bull blocks, to reach the final diameter, surface finish and tensile strength. Drawing machines, dies, lubricants and take-up systems belong to the wire machinery scope that runs alongside tube technology.

Cable machinery

Equipment for stranding, bunching, insulating, sheathing, taping, braiding, armouring and rewinding power, data and specialty cable, including extrusion lines, pay-off and take-up units and in-line measurement. It is the cable side of the co-located wire technology scope.

Laser tube cutting and tube bending

Downstream processing that turns tube into parts: fibre laser cutting with a rotary chuck or 3D head, CNC mandrel bending, hydroforming, end forming and punching. These cells are what fabrication and automotive buyers come to see running live.

Coil processing and slitting lines

Decoiling, levelling, slitting, edge trimming and cut-to-length lines that prepare steel coil for tube mills and roll-forming lines. Strip width, camber, edge quality and coil handling automation directly affect tube mill yield.
