Best forAl Rawdah and Capital Centre hotels to National Library and Archives

Best forWorld Trade Centre Metro Station (Red Line) to venue

RTA Red Line stops at World Trade Centre - buy or top up a Nol Card at the station.

    Weather

Mid-to-late January is Abu Dhabi's cooler, drier window and suits an indoor library and archives programme. Expect daytime highs near 24 C and overnight lows in the mid teens, with humidity along the coast and occasional short showers. The free-sources weather family returned no forecast for this run, so treat the temperature band as January climatology rather than a forecast. The air-quality pull returned a US AQI near 87 with PM2.5 around 25 micrograms per cubic metre and PM10 around 54.6, so attendees with respiratory sensitivity should check daily advisories before spending time outdoors and note that dust-lifting winds can raise readings quickly.

    Plan for the climate

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

Mobile coverage in Abu Dhabi is strong on the du and Etisalat networks. Options for delegates include an eSIM bought before departure, a prepaid tourist SIM collected at Zayed International Airport arrivals, or roaming from your home operator. Venue Wi-Fi for the National Library and Archives should be confirmed with the organiser, and anyone planning live demos of repository, IIIF or HTR tools should carry offline copies and a tethering backup. Some voice and video calling features in popular apps have historically been restricted on local networks, so test your usual meeting tools or ask the venue about supported services before scheduling client calls. UAE sockets are type G at 220-240V, so bring a UK-style adapter for laptops and demo equipment.

    Ride-hailing

    Taxis

    Public transit

    Car rentals

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Venue setting

The National Library and Archives is a working cultural institution rather than a convention centre, so access to reading rooms, collection areas and photography permissions should be confirmed with the organiser and venue staff. Carry photo ID or your passport for building entry.

    Language and dress

Arabic is the official language and English is widely used in institutional and business settings, including signage and conference material. Conservative smart-casual dress works well for a national library: covered shoulders and knees, and a light layer for chilled lecture theatres.

    Currency and payments

The currency is the UAE dirham (AED), pegged to the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere including taxis and airport buses, but keep a small amount of cash for tips and small purchases; hotel and flight captures for this edition were quoted in AED.

    Working week and timings

The UAE public sector week runs Monday to Friday with a Saturday-Sunday weekend, while many private businesses work Monday to Saturday. Government offices and institutions keep shorter hours, so schedule any institutional visits or archive appointments in advance rather than assuming walk-in access.

    Local etiquette

Handshakes are common in professional settings but not universally offered across genders - follow your host's lead. Avoid photographing people without consent, and check before photographing any building with security or government functions. Alcohol is served in licensed hotel venues only.

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: AUH

Google Flights quotes captured in AED for 18 January 2027 departures into Abu Dhabi: London LHR from about AED 2,036 (via Bahrain, roughly 17 hours total), Dubai DXB from about AED 1,730, Tokyo NRT from about AED 4,056 on the nonstop Etihad/ANA service of around 12 hours 20 minutes, and Sydney SYD from about AED 5,707 direct with one-stop options priced up to about AED 6,499. These are live quoted prices including taxes and fees for one adult and they change frequently, so re-check before booking. New York JFK and Singapore SIN searches returned no usable fares in the capture. If you land at DXB instead of AUH, budget an additional 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours of road transfer to Abu Dhabi.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Primary gateways: Zayed International (AUH). Allow road or rail time to National Library and Archives; on-site parking is usually available at major exhibition venues.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near National Library and Archives: Al Rawdah, near National Library and Archives: Millennium Al Rawdah Hotel; Al Seef, near National Library and Archives: Andalus Al Seef Resort & Spa; Abu Dhabi, short drive from National Library and Archives: Capital Suites Hotel and Residences.

Ride-hail: App-based ride-hailing is widely used in Abu Dhabi, with Careem and Uber as the dominant options; confirm current availability and coverage in your app before travelling. Pickups at Zayed International Airport (AUH) happen from designated zones and card payment is standard. Expect an estimated AED 80-130 from the airport to the National Library and Archives depending on vehicle class and demand, and lower in-city hops of roughly AED 20-40 between Al Rawdah and Al Seef hotels and the venue. Surge pricing can apply around late-night arrivals and during major events, so compare the app quote with the metered taxi rank.

Public transit: Abu Dhabi public transport is bus-based; there is no metro or passenger rail link to the National Library and Archives in the evidence reviewed for this listing. Zayed International Airport publishes city bus routes and timetables from the terminals, and fares are paid with a Hafilat card at roughly AED 2 per boarding (estimate - confirm the current tariff). Buses serve the city rather than the library door, so plan a final taxi leg of around AED 20-40. For delegates arriving with luggage or demo equipment, a metered taxi or app-based car from the airport is the simpler door-to-door option.

Parking: Parking at and around the National Library and Archives is typically available, and the captured nearby hotels advertise free parking for guests. Confirm current visitor parking arrangements, any charges and any security checks with the organiser or venue before driving, and allow extra time on session mornings. If you are bringing scanners, servers or other demonstration hardware, ask the organiser in advance about loading access and short-term parking near the entrance.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

Month: January (2027 edition planning window captured as 18-21 January)

Temperature: Approx. 13-17 C overnight and 22-24 C by day, with coastal humidity - January climatology for Abu Dhabi, not a live forecast; confirm before travel

Seasonality: January falls in Abu Dhabi's cool, mostly dry season. Rain is infrequent but short heavy showers are possible, and occasional shamal winds lift dust and raise particulate levels; the air-quality pull for this run showed US AQI near 87 with PM2.5 around 25 micrograms per cubic metre and PM10 around 54.6. Check daily advisories if you have respiratory sensitivity.

Packing: Pack light layers: warm-weather clothing for outdoors plus a jacket or cardigan for heavily air-conditioned reading rooms and lecture theatres. Bring comfortable walking shoes for a large campus, modest smart-casual outfits for institutional settings, a UK-style type G plug adapter for 220-240V sockets, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle. Add a light rain shell for the occasional January shower and, if you are sensitive to dust or pollen, a mask for windy days.

    Plan your trip

    Planning

Best day to visit: Day 2 (mid-show)

Mid-show days at The International Digital Archives Conference usually combine full exhibitor attendance with scheduled B2B meetings, before early pack-down on the final day.

    T-1

Day 14 (around 4 January 2027): confirm your registration category and save the confirmation from shapingknowledge.com, including any badge collection instructions.

    Day 12

book flights into Zayed International (AUH) and reserve a hotel in Al Rawdah or Al Seef within walking distance of the National Library and Archives.

    Day 10

check your UAE entry position (visa-free, visa on arrival or sponsored visa) and request an invitation letter from the organiser if your application needs one.

    Day 9

draft a personal agenda from the published schedule, marking the digitisation, metadata, preservation and AI-on-collections sessions that match your remit.

    Day 7

arrange travel insurance that covers the UAE, and store the venue address and organiser contact offline on your phone.

    Day 6

    FAQs & glossary

    Answers

    Frequently asked

What is this Abu Dhabi knowledge and digital heritage event about?
It is a programme for the digital humanities, library, archive and knowledge management community, held at the National Library and Archives in Abu Dhabi. Sessions and demonstrations focus on digitisation, digital preservation, metadata and linked data, collection platforms and the use of AI on cultural heritage material.
When exactly does the 2027 edition run?
The hotel and flight captures used for this listing were built around an 18-21 January 2027 window in Abu Dhabi. Treat those dates as the planning assumption and confirm final dates, session times and room allocations on the organiser schedule at shapingknowledge.com/schedule before booking travel.
Where is the venue and how do I get there from the airport?
The venue is the National Library and Archives in Abu Dhabi. Zayed International Airport (AUH) is the main gateway, roughly 23-30 km and 30-31 minutes by road via the E10, with an approximate metered taxi fare of AED 70-110. City buses run from the airport into Abu Dhabi and cost a few dirhams with a Hafilat card, but you will still need a short taxi leg to the library district.
How do I register as a delegate or exhibitor?
Registration routes are published on the organiser site at shapingknowledge.com; check the schedule page and the registration or contact links there for delegate, speaker, exhibitor and student categories. This listing does not quote ticket or stand prices because no official price list was captured, so confirm fees directly with the organiser.
Is the event open to the public or restricted to professionals?
That depends on the registration categories the organiser opens for the 2027 edition. Library, archive and university staff are the core audience, but many editions of this kind of programme also admit students and researchers. Check the registration page or email the organiser before assuming day passes are available.
Which airport should international delegates fly into?
Zayed International (AUH) is the closest and simplest option, about half an hour from the library district. Dubai International (DXB) is a viable alternative with far more long-haul connections, but the road transfer to Abu Dhabi adds roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic, so factor that into arrival times.
Where should I stay near the National Library and Archives?
The closest cluster is in Al Rawdah and Al Seef. Millennium Al Rawdah Hotel is about 920 m from the venue, Andalus Al Seef Resort and Spa about 1.7 km, Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre about 680 m, and Capital Suites Hotel and Residences a short drive away. Nightly rates in this listing are labelled estimates in USD and AED; confirm live rates at booking.
Do I need a visa to attend in Abu Dhabi?
Entry rules depend on your nationality. Many passport holders receive visa-free entry or a visa on arrival, while others need a sponsored visit visa arranged before travel. Check with the UAE embassy or the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, and ask the organiser for an invitation letter if your application needs one.
What is the weather like in Abu Dhabi in January?
January is the coolest, driest part of the Abu Dhabi year, with daytime highs near 24 C and overnight lows in the mid teens. Rain is infrequent but short showers and occasional dust-lifting winds occur; the air-quality pull for this run showed a US AQI near 87 with PM2.5 around 25 micrograms per cubic metre, so sensitive visitors should check daily advisories.
What should I pack for a January conference at a national library?
Light layers work best: warm-weather clothing for the outdoors plus a jacket or cardigan for heavily air-conditioned reading rooms and lecture theatres. Bring a UK-style type G plug adapter (UAE sockets are 220-240V), comfortable shoes for a large campus, and modest smart-casual dress for institutional settings.
Is parking available at the venue?
On-site parking is typical at the National Library and Archives and the surrounding Al Rawdah district, and nearby hotels advertise free parking. Confirm current visitor parking arrangements and any charges with the organiser or venue before driving, especially if you are carrying equipment for a demo.
How do I keep in touch with the office while I am in Abu Dhabi?
Buy an eSIM before departure or pick up a prepaid du or Etisalat SIM at Zayed International Airport arrivals. Some voice and video calling features in popular apps have historically been restricted on local networks, so test your usual meeting tools or ask the venue about Wi-Fi access before relying on them for client calls.
