    Next edition outlook

    2027-01-29 – 2027-01-31
    medium

The 2027 Charleston Boat Show will be the 47th annual edition, returning to the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, SC from January 29–31, 2027. The show is expected to feature 150+ exhibitors and continue its role as the premier marine event in South Carolina and the unofficial kickoff of the Lowcountry boating season. The 2027 edition will be the first to take place after South Carolina's new boat property tax law (H.3858) takes effect on January 1, 2027, reducing the effective tax rate from 10.5% to 6% — a significant tailwind expected to boost buyer affordability and stimulate purchase intent at the show

First edition after South Carolina's boat property tax reduction (6% effective rate) takes effect on January 1, 2027, expected to significantly improve buyer affordability Estimated 150+ exhibitors, up from 130+ in 2026, per the official Experience page Continued family programming including free Hook the Future Kids Fishing Clinics, face painting, and live music Ongoing expansion of the Lowcountry marine market supported by infrastructure investments such as Safe Harbor's Megadock Phase 2 and MarineMax's new Daniel Island showroom

    Impact

    A bigger and stronger platform

The Charleston Boat Show is the largest boat show in South Carolina and a major economic driver for the Lowcountry. With half a million registered boats in the state generating an annual economic impact of $6.5 billion, the show serves as the unofficial kickoff of the boating season each January. The 2026 edition drew thousands of attendees and featured more than 200 watercraft from over 100 boat brands and 130+ exhibitors, filling the Charleston Area Convention Center. The show attracts buyers from across the Southeast, including Charlotte, Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Wilmington, reinforcing Charleston's position as a regional boating hub

    Audience quality

    High-value decision-makers

The Charleston Boat Show attracts a high-value, purchase-ready audience. According to official organiser data, 60% of attendees have household incomes over $100k, 83% own their own home, 64% attend specifically to comparison shop and purchase a boat, and 95%+ return rate demonstrates strong attendee engagement. The 2025 edition saw 98% of attendees say they would return in 2026. The demographic skew is 63% male, 57% aged 35–66, and 53% are returning attendees. The show draws serious buyers from across the Southeast, with attendees traveling from Charlotte, Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Wilmington

    Exhibitor outcomes

    Real business growth

Exhibitors at The Charleston Boat Show gain direct access to a qualified, high-intent buying audience at the start of the boating season. Organisers report that 64% of attendees come specifically to comparison shop and purchase a boat, and 60% have household incomes over $100k. The show's 95%+ return rate and 98% of 2025 attendees planning to return in 2026 demonstrate strong engagement. With 130+ exhibitors and 200+ watercraft on display, the event provides a concentrated three-day selling window in one of the Southeast's strongest boating markets. Chris Butler of Butler Marine described the show as 'my only piece of advertising that works eight months from now,' noting that customers often return to dealerships months later ready to buy

    Market context

Key market insights, trends, news and related events to help you understand the bigger picture.

Southeast United States / South Carolina Lowcountry

    Why it matters

The Charleston Boat Show matters because it sits at the intersection of three powerful market forces heading into 2027. First, it is the primary sales channel for the Lowcountry boating market: winter boat shows can drive 30%–60% of annual retail sales, and Charleston's show is the largest in South Carolina, drawing buyers from Charlotte, Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Wilmington. Second, South Carolina's new boat property tax law (effective January 1, 2027) cuts the effective rate from 10.5% to 6%, removing a major purchase barrier right before the show opens — a genuine tailwind for both buyers and exhibitors. Third, the regional marine infrastructure is expanding rapidly, with Safe Harbor's Megadock Phase 2 completion, Suntex's acquisition of Charleston Harbor Marina, and MarineMax's new Daniel Island showroom signaling long-term confidence in the Charleston boating market. For exhibitors, the show delivers a high-value audience: 60% of attendees have household incomes over $100k, 64% attend to comparison shop and purchase a boat, and the event maintains a 95%+ return rate. For buyers, it is the only place to compare fishing boats, center consoles, cruisers, pontoons, yachts, and personal watercraft from more than 100 boat brands and 150+ exhibitors under one roof, with show-only pricing and free family programming. In a market where new boat sales are stabilizing after an 8%–10% correction, the Charleston Boat Show is both a barometer and a catalyst for the Southeast's recreational boating economy

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

U.S. Recreational Boating Market Stabilizing After Post-Pandemic Correction

The U.S. recreational boating market entered 2026 in a position of relative stability. New powerboat retail unit sales declined an estimated 8%–10% in 2025 to approximately 215,000–225,000 units, reflecting continued economic headwinds. In 2026, mixed economic conditions are expected to result in new powerboat sales on par to slightly up from last year. Industry sentiment improved, with 43% of executives anticipating modest improvement over the next 12 months and 60% expecting company revenue to increase

    Source
    02

Entry-Level and Trailerable Boats Drive Volume; Pre-Owned Dominates

Volume-leading segments — personal watercraft, aluminum fishing boats, and smaller trailerable boats — accounted for more than 90% of retail unit activity in 2025. Freshwater fishing boats were a bright spot, holding steady at approximately 53,000 units. Pre-owned boats represent approximately 80% of total annual unit sales (nearly 860,000 units in 2024), remaining critical for meeting consumer demand across price points. This trend favors the Charleston Boat Show's diverse mix of jon boats, skiffs, center consoles, and entry-level fishing boats

    Source
    03

Winter Boat Shows Remain a Critical Sales Channel

Winter boat shows can drive an estimated 30% to 60% of annual retail sales and serve as a key barometer for the year ahead. Unlike auto shows, consumers can purchase boats and accessories directly on the show floor. Manufacturers and dealers report that boat shows remain an important component of market expansion strategy, with exhibitors reporting increased sales activity, strong exposure, and engagement with new customers despite mixed economic conditions

    Source
    04

South Carolina Boat Tax Reform Boosts Affordability

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed H.3858 into law on March 30, 2026, reducing the effective boat property tax rate from 10.5% (the highest in the country) to 6%, effective January 1, 2027. The law creates a single bill for both the boat and motor, eliminating outboard engine titling and double taxation. This tax relief is expected to make boat ownership more affordable and stimulate demand in the Lowcountry market, directly benefiting the 2027 Charleston Boat Show's buyer audience

    Source
    05

    Charleston Marine Infrastructure Investment Accelerates

The Charleston region is seeing significant marine infrastructure investment. Safe Harbor Charleston City completed Phase 2 of its Megadock expansion in March 2026, adding 2,200 feet of contiguous floating fuel dock capable of accommodating vessels 35'–455', with advanced electrical infrastructure for superyachts. Suntex Marinas acquired Charleston Harbor Marina (one of South Carolina's largest in-water marinas), and Procaccianti Companies acquired the adjacent Charleston Harbor Resort. MarineMax Charleston is building a new 10,000 sq ft showroom on Daniel Island

    Source
    06

Show Experience Evolution: Digital Integration and Immersive Engagement

Boat show producers and exhibitors are increasingly pairing on-site experiences with digital engagement — using teasers, livestreams, and virtual walk-throughs to extend reach beyond show days. Improved layouts, upgraded hospitality, and more immersive elements (hands-on education, social events) are shaping how showgoers explore brands. Simply setting up a booth is no longer enough; a coordinated before-, during-, and after-show marketing and sales strategy is essential. The Charleston Boat Show's family programming, live music, and interactive exhibits align with this trend

Southeast & East Coast Winter/Spring Boat Show Circuit 2027

    January – April 2027

The Charleston Boat Show occupies a strategic position in the winter/spring boat show circuit, anchored between the Atlanta Boat Show in early January and the Miami International Boat Show in February. The Charleston show's late-January timing captures buyers who have attended earlier shows and are ready to commit, while its Lowcountry setting and strong dealer network make it a high-conversion event for the Southeast market

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

Boating as a Lowcountry Way of Life

Boating is deeply woven into Charleston's cultural fabric. With half a million registered boats in South Carolina and a $6.5 billion annual economic impact, the Charleston Boat Show is more than a trade event — it is a community gathering that marks the unofficial start of the boating season. The show's atmosphere reflects the Lowcountry's relaxed coastal lifestyle, with local food vendors, live regional music, and a strong emphasis on family participation

    Family-First Show Culture

The Charleston Boat Show is deliberately family-friendly. Free Kids Fishing Clinics, face painting, and children's ticket pricing ($7 for ages 4–12, free under 4) make it accessible to families. The show's programming reflects a broader cultural emphasis on getting the next generation on the water and preserving South Carolina's boating heritage

    Local Food and Music Scene

The show features local food vendors and live music from Charleston-area artists, adding to the regional character of the event. The Lowcountry's culinary traditions, including shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, and Frogmore stew, are celebrated throughout the region

    Maritime History and Heritage

Charleston's maritime history dates back to its founding in 1670. The city's culture combines Southern American traditions with influences from Britain, France, and West Africa. The historic Mosquito Fleet, immortalized in the opera Porgy and Bess, is a testament to the region's rich boating heritage
