Attendees accessed 60+ hours of peer-reviewed clinical CPD and policy updates, earning one CPD point per hour of learning. The programme included 90+ speakers, 320 exhibitors, and 400+ peer-reviewed research posters. Keynote speakers included Professor Kamila Hawthorne (giving her final address as RCGP Chair), Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in Wales Jeremy Miles MS, Children's Commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza, and Professor Bob Klaber on the importance of kindness in medicine. The event featured dedicated well-being initiatives including quiet zones, family relaxation rooms, mindful woodland walks, and a fun run — all designed to reduce stress and encourage longer participation. Cultural touchpoints included a surprise performance by the Cardiff Male Choir, bilingual Welsh-English communication throughout the venue, and local food and storytelling. The conference was found COMPLIANT with the EthicalMedTech Conference Vetting System (CVS)

    Audience quality

    High-value decision-makers

The 2025 RCGP Annual Conference attracted a high-calibre audience of over 2,000 GPs, GP registrars, and primary care professionals from across the UK and internationally. The 2024 edition saw 40% of delegates being GP registrars, reflecting the conference's strong appeal to early-career doctors. The event is designed for healthcare professionals only and is self-accredited, with CPD points calculated at a ratio of one CPD point per hour of learning. Attendees included practising GPs, GP trainers, medical educators, foundation year doctors, medical students, allied health professionals, and practice staff. The conference is shaped by RCGP members and overseen by experienced practitioners, ensuring content is directly relevant to the needs of the general practice community

    Exhibitor outcomes

    Real business growth

No official exhibitor ROI statistics were published by the RCGP for the 2025 edition. However, exhibitor testimonials from the 2023 and 2025 editions provide strong qualitative evidence of commercial value. Dictate.IT, exhibiting for the first time in 2023, stated: 'This was our first year exhibiting at the RCGP Annual Conference and we were thrilled with the conversations we were able to have, introducing our solutions to GP's from across the country.' Praktiki, exhibiting for the first time in 2025, reported that over 1,000 GPs registered for their platform in just two days, with 'back-to-back conversations at the stand' and 'incredible feedback from clinicians across the UK.' One GP described their offering as 'the GP knowledge version of Duolingo.' The event also generated interest from over 20 organisations keen to use Praktiki's AI-powered content platform. The RCGP's partnership with Wonderly won the Best Association Partnership or Collaboration award at the Association Excellence Awards in November 2024, recognising exceptional delegate experience alongside delivering organisation aims. The 2023 Annual Conference broke all records, and profits were reinvested to fund a new free-for-members global virtual event that saw over 3,400 members engage with the College from around the world

United Kingdom — General Practice & Primary Care

    Why it matters

The RCGP Annual Conference and Exhibition 2026 matters because it convenes the UK's largest gathering of GPs and primary care professionals at a critical inflection point for general practice. With 2,000+ attendees, 180+ speakers, 100+ exhibitors and sponsors, and 400+ peer-reviewed posters, the event is the single most important forum for the profession to address the defining challenges of the moment: a workforce crisis that has pushed patient-to-GP ratios to 2,300:1 in England, a tripling of AI adoption among GPs since 2024 alongside a significant confidence gap, and the rollout of a landmark new GP contract that guarantees same-day urgent care appointments. The 2026 theme, 'Defining the future of general practice, together,' reflects the profession's need for collective action on workforce, digital health, health inequalities, and system leadership. The conference also comes at a pivotal political moment, with the Scottish Parliament elections in May 2026 and ongoing debates about general practice's share of NHS funding. For GPs and primary care professionals, the event offers an unmatched opportunity to build clinical expertise, explore research and innovation, and connect with a supportive professional community. For exhibitors and sponsors, it provides direct access to 2,000+ decision-makers and influencers in the UK's primary care market

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

GP workforce crisis intensifies as patient-to-GP ratios hit record highs

General practice in the UK is facing an escalating workforce crisis. As of March 2026, there were approximately 2,300 patients for every qualified full-time equivalent GP in England — a 13% increase since 2015. In the past six years, the number of patients registered with a GP has risen by 6.3%, with only 2.3% more full-time equivalent GPs to look after them. The GMC has warned that expecting GPs to plug workforce gaps risks 'killing the primary care model,' with more than three-quarters of GP days described as 'high intensity' and GPs at highest risk of burnout across all groups of doctors. The BMA has found that four-fifths of England's integrated care boards would need to at least double their number of GPs to meet staffing standards considered safe for patients

    02

AI adoption among UK GPs triples in three years, but confidence and governance lag behind

AI use among UK GPs has risen dramatically from 20% in 2024 to 52% in 2026 — a threefold increase in just three years. Among GPs who use AI, ChatGPT is the most common tool (67%), followed by Heidi Health (46%) and Microsoft Copilot (24%). AI scribes are used by 40% of GPs, with an additional 23% reporting past use. However, a significant confidence gap persists: only 23% of UK GPs say they would now recommend general practice to a prospective trainee as confidently as they did before AI entered the workplace. The RCGP Annual Conference 2026 addresses this directly with sessions on 'The role of AI in general practice: evidence, experience and ethics' and CPD Essentials on digital safeguarding

    03

New GP contract introduces same-day urgent care guarantee and £485m funding uplift

The 2026/27 GP contract, effective 1 April 2026, includes a £485 million funding uplift — a 3.6% cash increase and 1.4% real-terms growth — bringing total contract investment to over £13.8 billion. A landmark new requirement mandates that all patients deemed clinically urgent by their GP practice must be dealt with on the same day. The contract also introduces a new practice-level GP reimbursement scheme to enable practices to recruit new GPs or increase sessions, a £25 million investment in structured weight management and obesity support services, and refinements to the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) to align with updated NICE guidance

    04

Digital-first access and online consultation tools become mandatory in general practice

From October 2025, all UK general practices have been required to make online consultation tools available during practice hours. The 2026 GP Patient Survey shows that 30.8% of patients now contact their GP practice online or through the NHS App, up from 22.4% in 2025. NHS England has set out plans for AI triage in the NHS App to reach over 200,000 patients within 12 months and all users by April 2028. However, research warns that policies aimed at improving online access may unintentionally widen inequalities for digitally excluded populations

    05

GP underemployment emerges as a paradox amid workforce shortages

A growing paradox is emerging in UK general practice: despite severe workforce shortages and rising patient demand, a significant number of qualified GPs are unemployed or underemployed. The number of available GP jobs has dropped by around half in the last two years. General practice receives just 5.6% of the total NHS budget despite delivering around 31 million appointments a month. The RCGP has called for government to redistribute money to end GP underemployment, highlighting a structural mismatch between funding allocation and workforce supply

    06

GP patient satisfaction improves as access initiatives take effect

The 2026 GP Patient Survey shows a continued upward trend in patient satisfaction, with 76.7% of patients reporting a good overall experience of their GP practice, up from 75.4% in 2025 and 73.9% in 2024. Access improvements are a key driver: 76.8% of patients reported it was 'easy' to contact their GP in January 2026, up from 60.9% in July 2024. However, disparities remain, with patient-to-GP ratios exceeding 2,700:1 in some areas including London, Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes

The city has a strong reputation for clinical excellence and health innovation, with world-class facilities including the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the Glasgow Science Centre, where the James Mackenzie Lecture will take place. The SEC Glasgow, one of the UK's largest event campuses, provides an ideal setting for the conference

    Scottish general practice context

The Scottish Government has committed to increasing general practice's share of the NHS budget from approximately 6% to 7%, with a longer-term ambition of 15%. The BMA's Scottish GP Committee has agreed a funding package over 2026 to 2029 that will see recurrent funding to general practice increase by £250m by 2028/29. RCGP Scotland has been actively campaigning ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections in May 2026 for increased investment in GP services and resources targeted to patients in deprived communities

Parking costs around £10–£12 for events. Accessible parking has Blue Badge bays across levels 0–4 at £12 per day. The car park is open 24 hours with an accessible walkway directly to the campus.
