Edition recap
The 2025 Progressive Metro Boat Show, held September 11-14 at Lake St. Clair Metropark, was deemed a success by producer Michigan Boating Industries Association, exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees. More than 8,500 attendees strolled the walkways of the Shore and South marinas at the Metropark, spanning nearly a 1-mile footprint.
"This show is a significant boating event, being the largest in-water boat show in the region, spanning nearly a 1-mile footprint with hundreds of boats of all types and all sizes to see and purchase," said Show Manager Nicki Polan. "Many don't realize that Michigan is the third largest marine market in the country! Boating is big business in Michigan and this event has a big impact on this region."
"The beautiful weekend weather was perfect for the show! It was great to see thousands of consumers who attended to see the display of hundreds of boats and enjoy the show atmosphere with beer tents, live music and fun, making it one of our favorite events of the year," said Amy Crouchman of Walstrom Marine and MBIA Board Chair.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that the total economic impact of recreational boating in Michigan is a staggering $11.7 billion annually, up 82% since the same study in 2018. The recreational boating industry in Michigan supports 1,500 businesses and 58,000 jobs.

Audience quality
High-value decision-makers
The show attracts a high-intent boating audience from Michigan's Macomb, Wayne, and Oakland counties, plus visitors from surrounding states and Canada. Nearly 50% of attendees have household incomes over $100,000, 43% are in the prime market age of 35-54, 56% already own a boat, and 61% plan to purchase a boat. Michigan has approximately 835,000 registered boats and an estimated four million people who enjoy boating each year. The surrounding tri-county area has more than 200,000 registered boats, making the show a prime marketplace for dealers and marine businesses

Midwest / Great Lakes – United States
Why it matters
The Progressive Metro Boat Show occupies a unique position as the largest in-water boat show in the Midwest and a key sales driver for the Great Lakes region. Michigan is the third-largest marine market in the nation with $11.7–$11.8 billion in annual economic impact and approximately 835,000 registered boats. The surrounding Macomb, Wayne, and Oakland counties have more than 200,000 registered boats. The show provides boat dealers, marine accessory manufacturers, and outdoor recreation brands with direct access to a high-intent consumer audience: nearly 50% of attendees have household incomes over $100,000, 61% plan to purchase a boat, and 56% already own one. The event's in-water format allows consumers to board and experience boats directly, while the festival atmosphere — live music, food trucks, Kids Zone, and waterfront activities — broadens the addressable audience beyond core boating enthusiasts. As the boating market stabilizes and manufacturers launch new model year products, the Metro Boat Show serves as a critical fall-season showcase for a major marine market. The show's timing in mid-September positions it as a fall season closer, capturing end-of-season deals and 2027 model year introductions
Industry trends
Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.
01
Market Stabilization with Cautious Optimism
The U.S. recreational boating market enters 2026 in a position of relative stability, with new powerboat unit sales expected to be on par to slightly up from 2025. NMMA estimates 2025 sales declined 8% to 10% to approximately 215,000–225,000 units, but entry-level segments like personal watercraft, aluminum fishing boats, and smaller trailerable boats continue to account for more than 90% of retail activity. Pre-owned boat sales represent about 80% of total annual unit sales, reaching nearly 860,000 in 2024. NMMA's Q1 2026 Marine Leadership Barometer showed 43% of executives anticipating modest industry improvement over the next 12 months, while 60% expect company revenue to increase
Michigan ranks as the third-largest marine market in the nation with approximately 835,000 registered boats, generating an estimated $11.7–$11.8 billion in annual economic impact — up 82% since the same study in 2018. The industry supports 1,500 businesses and 58,000 jobs. The state's first-ever Michigan Maritime Strategy, announced in January 2026, is a 10-year roadmap to modernize infrastructure, accelerate clean energy transition, and grow the maritime manufacturing economy. Michigan ports support approximately 17,000 jobs and contribute $3.3 billion annually, while water-based tourism adds nearly $12 billion and 45,000 jobs
Groupe Beneteau announced the planned closure of its Cadillac, Michigan plant in Q3 2026 and divestment of the Four Winns, Glastron, and Scarab Jet brands, citing a cumulative $34.2 million operating loss across 2024–2025 and a nearly 30% reduction in orders. This reflects broader pressures on discretionary marine manufacturing, though Michigan boat dealers remain optimistic for 2026 with expected unit sales normalizing to 15,000–16,000 in the Michigan/Indiana territory. Many dealers attribute up to half of their annual sales from boat shows and leads gained from them
Winter and regional boat shows can drive an estimated 30% to 60% of annual retail sales and serve as a key barometer for the year ahead. The 2026 Detroit Boat Show was sold out with a waiting list for exhibitor space, and boat dealers reported steady sales despite lower overall unit volumes in recent years. Boating activity is up, and industry experts anticipate a busy 2026 boating season. The 2026 Miami International Boat Show saw international attendance increase approximately 20% year-over-year
Sustainability is a growing theme across boat shows and the marine industry. The Michigan Maritime Strategy prioritizes accelerating adoption of low- and zero-emission vessel technologies and fuels, modernizing ports and harbors, and increasing resilience of recreational harbors and marinas. Industry-wide, there is growing demand for hybrid propulsion systems, electric boats, and sustainable marine products. IBEX 2026 will feature expanded education topics including advanced propulsion technologies and evolving safety standards
NMMA Reports U.S. Recreational Boating Market Enters 2026 in Relative Stability
The National Marine Manufacturers Association estimates total new powerboat retail unit sales were down 8% to 10% in 2025 to approximately 215,000–225,000 units. In 2026, mixed economic conditions are expected to result in new powerboat sales on par to slightly up from last year. Pre-owned sales represent 80% of total annual unit sales, reaching nearly 860,000 in 2024
The 10-year strategy aims to strengthen, sustain, and modernize Michigan's multibillion-dollar maritime sector, unlocking new investment, fostering innovation, and creating good-paying jobs. Michigan's 33 active ports support about 17,000 jobs and contribute $3.3 billion annually; water-based tourism adds nearly $12 billion and 45,000 jobs
Detroit Boat Show Sold Out as Boating Enthusiasts Gear Up for 2026 Season
The 68th annual Detroit Boat Show in Novi was sold out with a long waiting list of exhibitors. MBIA Executive Director Nicki Polan said boat sales have been steady and that despite lower boat sales numbers, boating activity is up and the summer of 2026 is expected to be busy. Exhibitors reported positive sales activity
Marine Leadership Barometer: Q1 Survey Signals Steadier Industry Outlook in 2026
43% of respondents anticipate modest improvement in the recreational boating industry over the next 12 months, while 60% expect company revenue to increase during the same period. Favorable short-term outlook rose 97% from Q1 2025, while negative sentiment fell 42%
Groupe Beneteau to Close Cadillac Plant, Divest Four Winns, Glastron and Scarab Jet Brands
The French boat manufacturer will halt production at its Cadillac, Michigan facility in Q3 2026 and divest the site along with its Four Winns, Glastron, and Scarab Jet brands, citing a downturn in the recreational boating market and a cumulative $34.2 million operating loss across 2024–2025. The closure affects 232 employees
Michigan Boat Dealers Optimistic for 2026 After Two Years of Declining Sales
Michigan boat dealers say they're seeing the first signs of a sales rebound after two straight years of industrywide declines, based on early indicators from the 2026 boat show season. Many dealers attribute up to half of their annual sales from boat shows and leads gained from them
The core circuit runs from September through March, with the Metro Boat Show (September) followed by regional fall shows (Annapolis in October, Fort Lauderdale in October/November), then winter indoor shows (Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Miami) beginning in January
The Progressive Metro Boat Show is a key stop on the Great Lakes and national boat show circuit, bridging the end-of-summer selling season with the fall and winter indoor show season. Similar in-water events such as the Windy City Boat & Yacht Show (Chicago, June) and the Newport International Boat Show (Rhode Island, September) share its in-water format and consumer-focused positioning. The circuit serves as a critical barometer for the marine industry, with many dealers attributing up to half of their annual sales to boat shows. The Metro Boat Show's fall timing makes it a natural follow-on for buyers who attended summer shows or who are looking for end-of-season deals on 2026 and 2027 models

All items imported under carnet must be re-exported within the validity period (up to one year for Commercial Samples and Professional Equipment)
September in Harrison Township, Michigan brings mild fall weather along the Lake St. Clair shoreline. Average high temperatures reach approximately 74°F (23°C) and average lows drop to around 56°F (13°C), based on 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Detroit. The show is an entirely outdoor event along the waterfront, so planning for variable conditions is essential

Cultural notes
Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.
Harrison Township – 'Boat Town USA'
Harrison Township, where the venue is located, is known as 'Boat Town USA' and has been informally called that for decades. State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine introduced House Bill 4010 in May 2025 to officially recognize the township with this designation, highlighting Michigan's connection to boating culture. The township has nearly 51 miles of Lake St. Clair coastline and canals, four public boat launches, nearly 40 private marinas, and approximately 8,000 boat slips. Boating is not just a pastime here — it is a way of life, with canal neighborhoods, sunset cruises, and weekends that revolve around the lake
Michigan – The Great Lakes State
Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State, and boating is deeply embedded in its identity and economy. The state has approximately 835,000 registered boats and an $11.7 billion annual recreational boating economic impact, supporting 1,500 businesses and 58,000 jobs. Lake St. Clair, known as the 'Sixth Great Lake,' is a 430-square-mile body of water connecting Lake Huron and Lake Erie, serving as a world-class fishery and a favorite summer playground for boaters
Festival Atmosphere and Local Flavor
The Metro Boat Show combines boat shopping with a fall festival atmosphere. The show features live music at the Tiki Bar from local bands, Michigan craft beers and hard cider at two bars (North Bar and Tiki Bar), food trucks, lawn games, a Kids Zone with crafts and bounce houses, and a Sustainability booth. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are allowed. The show only accepts US currency. The overall vibe is relaxed, family-friendly, and celebratory of Michigan's waterfront lifestyle
Lake St. Clair Metropark – A Regional Destination
Lake St. Clair Metropark is a 770-acre regional park operated by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system. Beyond the boat show, the park offers over 1 mile of shoreline, a 1,600-foot boardwalk, a sandy beach, a 50-meter outdoor pool with waterslides, a splash pad, a nature center, a par 3 golf course, tennis and volleyball courts, picnic areas, and miles of paved trails. The park is a popular destination for Metro Detroit families and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the summer season

The show is entirely outdoors with uneven terrain — not ideal for visitors with limited mobility unless using accessible trolley and wheelchair services
exhibit
You sell boats or marine products in Michigan or the Great Lakes region, have a booth budget of $5,000 or more, and can commit to a four-day presence in September 2026 with staff and inventory ready
Best for

Risks
Booth and space pricing not publicly published — requires direct negotiation with MBIA
Weather-dependent outdoor setup and teardown — build contingency for rain delays
High competition for prime in-water display positions along the marina — early commitment essential
Show draws 8,500+ attendees over four days, but traffic is concentrated on Saturday and Sunday
skip
You have no interest in boating, live far from Michigan with no other reason to visit, or are a marine professional outside the Great Lakes market with no local dealer or distribution network
Best for
Visitors with no interest in boating or outdoor recreation, marine businesses outside the Great Lakes region with no local dealer network, or travelers unwilling to make the trip to a seasonal outdoor event

No action needed — consider a future edition if your needs change, or explore indoor boat shows in your region
Risks
Event is outdoors and weather-dependent, with no indoor backup space
Venue is 21 miles from downtown Detroit with limited public transit options
The show is consumer-focused, not a trade-only B2B event — industry buyers seeking wholesale or export deals may not find the right audience
Tickets and parking add up for a family but the show lacks the scale of larger national marine expos
