    United Kingdom

    Why it matters

The Nursery Management Show 2026 arrives at a pivotal moment for the early years sector. The government's expanded childcare entitlements are now fully rolled out, with over £9.5 billion committed for 2026/27 – more than double the investment of 2023/24. However, providers are grappling with workforce shortages – staff numbers rose by only 20,600 between 2023 and 2025, falling short of the 35,000 needed to meet demand. SEND pressures are intensifying, with a new £47 million Inclusive Early Years Fund announced to support settings. At the same time, the sector is experiencing a wave of consolidation, with international entrants like Sweden's AcadeMedia acquiring UK nursery groups. Against this backdrop, the show provides a critical platform for nursery owners, CEOs, directors, and managers to access CPD-accredited content across four dedicated theatres (Leadership, Operational Excellence, NMT Owners Club, SEND), network with peers, and discover innovative solutions. For exhibitors, the show offers direct access to key decision-makers in a market where government funding, investor interest, and parental demand are creating significant growth opportunities

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

    Workforce shortages and retention crisis

The early years sector is struggling to attract and retain qualified practitioners, particularly for roles involving babies and children under three. Analysis by the NFER reveals that the number of early years staff rose by 20,600 between 2023 and 2025, falling short of the 35,000 additional staff the Department for Education said was needed to meet the needs of the expanded entitlement. Rising workloads, increasing expectations, and competition from higher-paying sectors are contributing to burnout and high turnover. Regions such as the South West, West Midlands and North East may be worst affected by potential staffing shortfalls

    Source
    02

    Expansion of government-funded childcare entitlements

Since September 2025, families in England have been able to access 30 hours of funded childcare from the age of nine months through to school age. In 2026/27, the government expects to provide over £9.5 billion for the early years entitlements, more than doubling annual public investment compared to 2023/24. 30 hours per week of government-funded childcare will save families up to £8,000 per eligible child per year. The pass-through rate, the minimum amount of funding local authorities pass through to providers, is being increased from 96% to 97%

    Source
    03

SEND provision pressures and new funding

SEND provision continues to place significant pressure on early years settings, with rising numbers of children with additional needs, delays in assessment, and inconsistent access to support. In response, the government has introduced the Inclusive Early Years Fund, providing £47 million of additional funding in 2026–2027 to support the sector to become more inclusive of children with SEND. A £200 million SEND and inclusion training package has also been announced, alongside up to 9,500 funded SENCO training places between 2026 and 2028

    Source
    04

    Market consolidation and international investment

The UK day nursery market continues to experience significant consolidation. In 2026, Grandir UK grew to 99 settings through acquisitions including Pippin's nurseries (seven settings) and First Place Nurseries (three settings). Swedish education group AcadeMedia entered the UK market with the acquisition of Chestnut Nursery Schools, a 21-preschool group with 2,100 children. Partou also expanded its UK portfolio with acquisitions in the North West. Large operators continue to drive deal activity, with the market having grown more than 50% in value since 2017

    Source
    05

Best Start in Life strategy and Family Hubs rollout

The government's 'Best Start in Life' strategy provides an overarching vision emphasising the importance of the first five years as foundational for lifelong outcomes. By 2028 there will be 1,000 Best Start Hubs, and the government wants these to include PVI nurseries. Family Hubs are being rolled out to provide a single access point for families, integrating health, education, and social care services. Stronger Practice Hubs are emerging as centres of excellence, disseminating evidence-based practice and driving continuous improvement
