    Weather

Munich in mid-December is cold and often overcast, with daytime temperatures typically around 1-5 degrees Celsius and night values near or below freezing. Rain, sleet and occasional snow are possible, and pavements can be icy. The Christmas-market season makes the city centre busy in the evenings. Pack a warm coat, layers, gloves, a waterproof outer layer and shoes with good grip, and check the short-term forecast before travelling.

    Plan for the climate

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

Munich has wide 4G and 5G mobile coverage, and EU/EEA SIM cards can use roam-like-at-home allowances in Germany. Visitors from outside the EU should arrange an eSIM before departure or buy a prepaid SIM from a German operator shop in the city centre; airport SIM kiosks are convenient but often pricier. Conference venues and university hospitals in Germany commonly provide guest Wi-Fi, but confirm the network and login process at registration. Download the MVV journey planner and a local map offline as a backup.

    Ride-hailing

    Taxis

    Public transit

    Car rentals

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Language and greetings

German is the local language, but conference sessions and medical discussions are commonly in English. A polite 'Guten Tag' and a handshake at introductions go a long way; use titles and surnames until invited otherwise.

    Punctuality and public behaviour

Munich runs on punctuality. Arrive on time for sessions and stand meetings, keep phone calls away from lecture rooms and respect quiet zones in the hospital campus. Queueing and ticket validation on public transport are expected.

    Cash, cards and Sunday opening

Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, but some smaller cafes, Christmas-market stalls and bakeries prefer cash. Many shops close on Sundays, so buy essentials and any pharmacy items on Saturday.

    Tipping

Restaurant bills usually include service, but rounding up by about 5-10 percent is customary for good service. State the total you want to pay when handing over cash or card, rather than leaving coins on the table.

    December in Munich

Christmas markets open across the city in December and are busiest in the evenings. Dress for cold, wet weather, watch for ice on pavements and allow extra time for crowded trams and U-Bahn trains around the city centre.

    Hospital campus etiquette

Klinikum rechts der Isar is a working university hospital. Follow signage, keep to conference areas, avoid photography of patients or clinical areas and do not block corridors during the changeover between sessions.

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: MUC

Munich Airport (MUC) is the main long-haul gateway in the captures, with nonstop Lufthansa and United departures from London Heathrow and New York JFK, while Asia-Pacific and Gulf origins route through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok or Bahrain. Depart on 9 or 10 December to arrive ahead of the 10-11 December programme. For European travellers, the capture also shows Eurostar plus onward rail from London St Pancras to Munich Central Station, about 9 hours 15 minutes with one change. Fares were captured for 10-14 December 2026 round trips and will move; recheck before booking and allow for winter disruption.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Primary gateways: Munich Airport (MUC): Approx. 35-45 min by car or taxi; approx. 50-60 min by S-Bahn plus U-Bahn; Memmingen Airport (FMM): Approx. 1 h 20 min to 1 h 40 min by car; longer by coach and rail; Nuremberg Airport (NUE): Approx. 1 h 45 min to 2 h by car; approx. 1 h 45 min to 2 h 15 min by train. Allow road or rail time to TUM University Hospital Rechts der Isar; on-site parking is usually available at major exhibition venues.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near TUM University Hospital Rechts der Isar: Steps from Klinikum rechts der Isar (approx. 160 m): Hotel Ritzi; Approx. 210 m from Klinikum rechts der Isar: mk | bed & breakfast münchen; Approx. 1.1 km from Klinikum rechts der Isar: Novotel Muenchen City.

Ride-hail: Uber, Bolt and Free Now are the ride-hail apps commonly used in Munich, alongside traditional taxi ranks at the airport, Hauptbahnhof and Max-Weber-Platz. App availability and pricing can vary, so confirm the pickup point in the app and compare the quote with a metered taxi. For the hospital campus, ask to be dropped at the main entrance rather than inside the clinical zone.

Public transit: Munich's MVV network combines S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus. For Klinikum rechts der Isar, the key interchange is Max-Weber-Platz on U4/U5, about a 5-10 minute walk from the campus, with tram and bus lines also serving the area. Buy a single, day or multi-day ticket in the MVV app or at machines, and validate paper tickets before boarding. From MUC, take S1 or S8 into the city and change to U4/U5. Check live routes and any engineering works before travelling.

Parking: Parking on the Klinikum rechts der Isar campus is limited and chargeable, with hospital patients and clinical staff given priority. Conference delegates should plan to arrive early, use a nearby commercial garage or leave the car at a Park-and-Ride site on the U-Bahn network and continue by train. Confirm current hourly and daily tariffs with the venue or on-site signage; do not assume free delegate parking.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

    Month: December

Temperature: Approx. 1-5 degrees Celsius daytime, with nights near or slightly below 0 degrees Celsius. These are seasonal norms, not a forecast; check the Munich forecast in the week before travel.

Seasonality: December is a cold, often overcast month in Munich, with rain, sleet and occasional snow. Christmas-market season brings high evening demand in the city centre, while icy pavements and short daylight hours make early arrival and sensible footwear important.

Packing: Pack a warm, waterproof coat, insulating layers, gloves, a hat and a scarf, plus shoes with good grip for wet or icy pavements. Bring an umbrella or hood, a small day bag for conference materials and a power bank for long days out. If you plan to visit Christmas markets in the evening, add a warm outer layer and cash for small stalls.
