    Next edition outlook

    2026
    confirmed

Modefabriek's next edition is the winter edition on 24 and 25 January 2027 at EXPO Greater Amsterdam in Vijfhuizen. The edition will mark the return of menswear to the trade show floor after more than three years, responding to retailer demand for a central place where womenswear and menswear come together. The organiser promises a more selective brand mix, a new visual identity, professional talks and a concept store, alongside the existing offering of shoes, accessories and lifestyle

Menswear returns to the Modefabriek trade show floor after more than three years of absence A more selective brand mix A new visual identity and refreshed look Professional talks programme returns after a summer edition without talks A concept store added to the format Venue: EXPO Greater Amsterdam, Stelling 1, 2141 SB Vijfhuizen

    Impact

    A bigger and stronger platform

Modefabriek Winter 2026 (18–19 January) was held at EXPO Greater Amsterdam in Vijfhuizen and was described by the organiser as a 'radiant success'. The venue's light, space and accessibility combined with a curated design and favourable winter weather created a positive atmosphere. The edition brought together a mix of long-standing and new exhibitors, including agencies such as WalhallaBrands, Fashion Club 70, Mote'l, AMODA, Tof Agency and AKF Agency. Brands including Collections, No Man's Land, Marc O'Polo, MAC Jeans, POM Amsterdam and Circle of Trust reported positive experiences. The TALKS programme featured trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and resident trend expert Jan Agelink, alongside Fashion Pro Talks on careers and leadership. Despite the organiser's strong qualitative assessment, no official visitor or exhibitor counts were released

    Audience quality

    High-value decision-makers

The January 2026 edition attracted a mix of fashion buyers, retailers, wholesalers, brand representatives, agents and media professionals. Organiser recap and trade press describe a high-quality audience of decision-makers from the Benelux and beyond, with a positive and determined mood. The Fashion Pro Talks attracted many young and ambitious visitors. Trade listing Uit Holland estimates more than 10,000 fashion professionals per edition, but this figure is not organiser-confirmed

    Exhibitor outcomes

    Real business growth

Exhibitors at the January 2026 edition reported positive commercial and strategic outcomes, though no quantified ROI data was published. Otto Klein of Collections described the venue, routing and atmosphere as 'fantastic' and emphasised the importance of experience for retailers. Lisa van den Berg of No Man's Land said customers wanted to see the collection at the start of the season to base buying decisions on, calling the atmosphere 'fantastic'. Maria Vervenne of Marc O'Polo highlighted the brand's long-standing partnership with De Bijenkorf and its shop-in-shops in all their stores. Lydia van Egmond of MAC Jeans said Modefabriek was 'crucial for staying informed, building connections and continuing conversations with potential clients', adding that the brand had 'made great progress again'. Suzette Hendriks of POM Amsterdam noted the brand had been present 'almost every season' and 'just keep growing'. Danielle Panhuysen of Circle of Trust described a versatile collection that could serve both mid-market and boutique segments in a single city

    Benelux / Netherlands

    Why it matters

Modefabriek Summer 2026 arrives at a pivotal moment for the Benelux fashion trade. Dutch fashion retail is forecast to grow around 3 percent in 2026, supported by improved purchasing power, but the mid-market faces structural pressure from fast fashion and Asian platforms, and sustainability is shifting from voluntary initiative to regulatory compliance. In this environment, Modefabriek serves as a concentrated meeting point where buyers can assess hundreds of womenswear, accessories, beauty and lifestyle brands in two days, while brands gain direct access to retailers from the Netherlands, Belgium and beyond. The 30-year anniversary edition reinforces Modefabriek's role as the Benelux's largest fashion trade event, and the organiser's renewed focus under CEO Rick van Rijthoven signals a strategic push to sharpen the event's identity around fashion and contemporary womenswear while sister event Shift covers denim, streetwear and sportswear. For international brands eyeing the Benelux market, Modefabriek offers a curated route to buyers in a region known for its open economy and role as a major fashion importer and re-exporter in Europe. The reintroduction of menswear in January 2027 further signals the organiser's ambition to offer a more complete buying platform

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

Dutch fashion retail returns to modest growth in 2026

ING Research forecasts around 3 percent revenue growth for the Dutch fashion sector in 2026, similar to the previous two years, supported by improved purchasing power. Overall retail is expected to grow 4.5 percent, while non-food retail grows around 4 percent. However, consumers remain price-conscious and the mid-segment faces structural pressure from fast fashion and Chinese platforms such as Shein and Temu

    Source
    02

Mid-market squeeze from fast fashion and Asian platforms

ING Research reports that the mid-segment of the Dutch fashion sector is under pressure from fast fashion. The shift toward cheaper segments, combined with the arrival of Chinese platforms like Shein and Temu, is squeezing mid-market retailers. Retailers are reluctant to pass on full cost increases due to intense competition, keeping margins under pressure

    Source
    03

Physical trade events reaffirmed amid digitalisation

Despite increasing digitisation of the fashion market, Modefabriek and trend expert Lidewij Edelkoort reaffirm the paramount importance of physical events. Edelkoort called for a 'return to the analogue world' at the January 2026 edition. The organiser states that the need for human contact, tactile inspiration and hands-on experience of collections remains the bedrock of the industry

    Source
    04

    Online fashion outpaces physical retail

Dutch online fashion sales are growing faster than physical clothing stores. Online fashion turnover jumped 14 percent year-on-year in May 2026 and 12.5 percent in March 2026, while total retail turnover rose 2.9 percent. Clothing and fashion retailers led online subsectors with a 5.6 percent increase in July 2026. Dutch e-commerce remains structurally strong

    Source
    05

    Benelux buying market pluralises

The emergence of multiple buying fairs in the Benelux is described as healthy by Modefabriek CEO Rick van Rijthoven. Modefabriek will focus on fashion and contemporary, while sister event Shift focuses on denim, streetwear and sportswear. The organiser sees clearer positioning across both events as beneficial for brands and buyers

    Source
    06

Sustainability shifts from voluntary to compliance-led

The Netherlands treats textiles as a circular-economy priority. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles came fully into force in January 2025, and 2026 marks the second year of full compliance. From 19 July 2026, a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, accessories and footwear applies to large enterprises. Dutch textile producers face their first full EPR report on 1 August 2026

As of late 2026, visa-exempt travellers will be required to obtain ETIAS authorisation before travel, though ETIAS was postponed to the end of 2026 and may not be in effect for the July 2026 edition

The Netherlands is a member of the ATA Carnet system, which permits duty-free and tax-free temporary import of goods for up to one year. ATA Carnets are accepted for exhibition materials used at trade fairs and exhibitions. Exhibitors should contact KVK (the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce) or their local authorised issuing body to obtain an ATA Carnet before travelling. The carnet must be validated by Dutch Customs before crossing the border. Non-EU exhibitors, including US and Canadian companies, need an ATA Carnet to temporarily import exhibition materials without paying EU import duties or Dutch VAT

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Direct communication and punctuality

Dutch business culture is known for its directness. Professionals cut to the heart of the matter, and appointments are expected to start on time. Over-politeness is generally distrusted. A brief, firm handshake with eye contact is the standard greeting. Don't use first names with associates unless invited to do so. The Dutch expect a certain standard of dress for business occasions. The majority of Dutch businesspeople speak excellent English, so language is rarely a barrier

    Egalitarian and informal workplace

Dutch workplaces are typically less hierarchical than in many other countries. Managers expect team members to share opinions, ask questions and take initiative. Silence is often interpreted as a lack of engagement. Business meetings are generally informal and focused on outcomes rather than formalities

    Sustainability as a regulatory expectation

Sustainability in Dutch fashion is increasingly a compliance matter rather than a branding exercise. Extended Producer Responsibility for textiles has been fully in force since January 2025, and from 19 July 2026 a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, accessories and footwear applies to large enterprises. International brands exhibiting at Modefabriek should be prepared for retailer questions about circularity, reuse and recycling credentials

    Practical guides

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the primary international gateway, with direct train connections to Zaandam every 30 minutes (journey time approximately 21-23 minutes, tickets from around €6). The venue is also accessible from Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Eindhoven Airport for travellers on regional or budget carriers. Book flights early for the best fares, especially for July travel which is peak tourist season in the Netherlands

    Visa

Whether you need a visa to attend Modefabriek depends on your nationality. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can enter freely. Nationals of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries can enter visa-free for short business trips of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Nationals of visa-required countries must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) before travelling

    Processing: Typically 15 calendar days

An invitation letter from Modefabriek BV or a Dutch business partner may be required as part of the visa application. The invitation should state the purpose of the visit, the duration of stay and who is responsible for costs. Applications are submitted at the Dutch embassy or consulate in the applicant's country of residence. Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel to allow for processing. A Visa Advisor tool is available on the Netherlands Worldwide website to help determine individual visa requirements

    Should you go?

Answer 8 quick questions to see whether Modefabriek Summer 2026 is best for you as a visitor, as an exhibitor, or whether it makes sense to skip this edition and target a different opportunity

    QUESTION 1 OF 8

What is your primary role in the fashion industry?

    Decision matrix

Compare participation options side by side to choose the best fit for your objectives.

    visit

You are a womenswear buyer or retailer seeking to discover new brands, reconnect with existing suppliers and place orders for the coming season

    Best for

Womenswear buyers, retailers, concept store owners and fashion professionals based in the Benelux or Northern Europe who want to discover collections, network and place orders

    Min. budget

    $50.00

    Timeline

Can decide close to the event. Tickets go on sale from May 2026. Book travel and accommodation 4-6 weeks in advance for best rates

    Risks

Summer edition has no talks programme, so less trend-education content

Womenswear-only focus means limited relevance if your buying scope is broader

Zaandam venue is less central than Amsterdam RAI, requiring extra travel planning

    exhibit

You have a womenswear or adjacent-category collection ready to show and want direct access to Benelux buyers in a curated, womenswear-focused environment

    Best for

Womenswear brands, accessory labels, beauty and lifestyle brands, and adjacent-category labels targeting Benelux retailers and international buyers

    Min. budget

    $3,000.00

    Timeline

Contact sales@modefabriek.nl at least 3 to 6 months in advance to secure stand space and plan logistics. Official stand pricing is not published — request a quote and brochure

    Risks

Stand investment is significant and returns depend on buyer attendance quality

No official visitor or exhibitor counts published, making ROI forecasting difficult

Summer edition lacks the talks programme that can draw additional footfall in winter

    skip

Your product focus is outside womenswear and adjacent categories, or you need a talks programme and conference-style content that the summer edition does not provide

    Best for

Menswear-focused brands, childrenswear labels, non-fashion businesses, and professionals whose goals are primarily trend education or conference content

    Timeline

    Not applicable

    Risks

Missing potential Benelux connections if your range is adjacent to womenswear or accessories

The winter edition typically offers a richer programme including TALKS and broader category representation
