    Market context

Key market insights, trends, news and related events to help you understand the bigger picture.

Europe – DACH region with a focus on Germany as Europe's largest logistics market

    Why it matters

LogiNext Germany matters because it sits at the intersection of three forces reshaping European logistics: the operational maturity of AI, the urgent need for supply chain resilience, and the digital transformation of port and maritime infrastructure. Germany is Europe's largest logistics market, with turnover in the logistics sector reaching approximately €361.3 billion in 2026 and freight and logistics revenues forecast to grow from $227.99 billion to $264.17 billion by 2031. Yet margins remain slim and competitive pressure is intense, with 79% of companies reporting that digitalisation presents major challenges. The event provides a focused platform where decision-makers from logistics, transport, supply chain management, port operations, and technology can examine practical applications of AI, automation, and data intelligence — not in isolation, but in the context of real operational constraints and measurable outcomes. The co-location with ALL ABOUT PORTS is particularly significant: ports are where digitalisation, automation, and infrastructure converge, and the integrated format reflects the growing recognition that onshore and offshore logistics can no longer be planned or optimised separately. For exhibitors, the event offers access to a concentrated audience of senior decision-makers from Germany's logistics heartland and beyond. For visitors, it delivers a curated view of which technologies are actually ready for deployment, supported by case studies, masterclasses, and direct access to the companies building them

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

AI moves from experimentation to operational reality

Artificial intelligence is shifting from theoretical possibility to practical application in logistics. Bitkom research from September 2026 shows 91% of logistics companies see digital technologies as an opportunity, and over half now use AI. Applications range from demand forecasting and route planning to real-time network management. At LogiNext Germany 2026, discussions focused on how AI can deliver measurable operational value rather than just technical novelty

    Source
    02

Resilience and redundancy become strategic priorities

Geopolitical disruptions, regulatory pressures, and supply chain shocks have made resilience a board-level concern. At LogiNext Germany 2026, Hamburg Port Authority CEO Jens Meier argued that resilience requires redundancy and should be treated as a strategic investment rather than a business case. Industry leaders discussed the need for alternative routes, cross-border regulatory coordination, and real-time information sharing among shipping lines, operators, and freight forwarders

    Source
    03

Automation adoption faces cost and knowledge barriers

While automation and robotics promise efficiency, accuracy, and scalability, adoption remains uneven. EHI research from 2026 found that German retail logistics companies rate their own automation level at only 5.3 out of 10, with robotics at 2.8 and AI at 2.6. High costs, lack of specialised staff, and difficulty integrating new systems into existing infrastructure are the primary obstacles. LogiNext Germany 2026 addressed this through masterclasses focused on structuring automation projects from strategy to measurable operational results

    Source
    04

Digital logistics converges with port and maritime innovation

The boundaries between digital logistics, port operations, and maritime technology are dissolving. LogiNext Germany 2026 was co-located with ALL ABOUT PORTS, creating a single platform where intermodal supply chains, global supply chain connectivity, digital ecosystems, and interoperability could be considered together. The Gateway Hamburg joint pavilion exemplified this convergence, with companies from both sectors presenting integrated solutions

    Source
    05

5G and private networks enable real-time port logistics

The Port of Hamburg has taken a significant step in digitalising its operations with the deployment of a private 5G campus network at HHLA's Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). Operational since May 2026 across more than one square kilometre, the network supports core logistics processes, real-time applications, and autonomous terminal operations. This infrastructure investment signals a broader trend toward high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity as a foundation for next-generation port and logistics automation

Bitkom study: Logistics industry bets on digitalisation and AI

A Bitkom study published in September 2026 found that 91% of logistics companies view digital technologies as an opportunity for the future, and more than half now use artificial intelligence. The study highlighted high energy prices, skills shortages, and supply chain disruptions as the biggest challenges, while digitalisation is expected to deliver greater supply chain transparency, better planning, and improved customer service levels. Over 500 logistics companies with 20 or more employees were surveyed

Germany accepts the ATA Carnet for the temporary importation of goods. From 1 June 2026, the digital ATA Carnet (eCarnet) is mandatory in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, and the United Kingdom; paper carnets issued before this date remain valid until their stated expiry date. In Germany, ATA Carnets are issued exclusively by the relevant local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) via the e-ata portal. The ATA Carnet applies only to durable goods such as trade fair and exhibition goods, professional equipment, and product samples — not to consumables such as foodstuffs. It is valid for a maximum of 12 months and eliminates the need to provide security in local currency for import duties. Processing at the border is paperless via a QR code using the free ATA Carnet app or desktop version. The digital procedure is being extended to all contracting states by the end of 2027

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

The CCH – Congress Center Hamburg is exceptionally well connected. The InterCity and S-Bahn station Dammtor (Messe/CCH) is directly adjacent to the venue, about 100–500 metres from the entrance. From Hamburg Airport, the S1 S-Bahn runs every 10 minutes directly to the city, taking about 25 minutes to Hauptbahnhof; from there, S21 or S31 continues one stop to Dammtor. The U-Bahn stations Stephansplatz (Oper/CCH) and Gänsemarkt are within a short walking distance through Planten un Blomen park. Several bus lines (MetroBus 4 and 5, Schnellbus 34) also serve Dammtor station. The CCH underground parking garage at Tiergartenstr. 2 provides 700 spaces on two levels, open 24/7. The venue is about 10 km from Hamburg Airport and 1.6 km from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. Major hotels such as the Radisson Blu are directly adjacent, and the city centre is within walking distance

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Tipping etiquette

Tipping in Hamburg is common but not obligatory. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or adding 5–10% is standard for good service. Say 'Stimmt so' when handing over payment to indicate the server should keep the change, or state the total amount you wish to pay. Tipping is generally given in cash even when paying by card. Taxi drivers typically receive around 10%

    Business etiquette

In professional settings, address people by their title and surname (e.g. Frau Doktor Jansen or Herr Müller) until explicitly invited to use first names. Shake hands firmly and briefly with everyone present, both before and after a meeting. Dress conservatively — dark colours such as grey and navy are appropriate for business. Punctuality is highly valued. The 'Hamburger Sie' is common in modern firms: addressing colleagues by first name while still using the formal 'Sie'

    Sunday closures and cash

Like most German cities, shops and supermarkets in Hamburg typically close on Sundays. Restaurants and cafes remain open. Many restaurants accept cash only, so it is advisable to carry some euros. Public transport, including the S-Bahn and U-Bahn, runs frequently seven days a week

    Hamburg's maritime identity

Hamburg is Germany's largest seaport and a key gateway for international trade. The city's identity is shaped by its maritime heritage, from the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district (a UNESCO World Heritage site) to the modern Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The harbour ferries are part of the public transport network and offer an affordable way to see the port. 'Moin' is the typical northern German greeting used throughout the day

Direct flights are available from most major European hubs. The airport is approximately 10 km from the CCH, with the S-Bahn S1 providing a direct connection to the city centre in about 25 minutes. Visa

LogiNext Germany 2026 takes place in Hamburg, Germany, which is part of the Schengen Area. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens and citizens of Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Israel, and 50+ other countries may enter Germany visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Nationals of countries without a visa-free agreement must apply for a Schengen Type C short-stay visa before travelling. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for business, trade fair, or visitor purposes. Exhibitors at German trade fairs are exempt from the visa fee when presenting official exhibitor accreditation. Applications can be submitted online via the Consular Services Portal at all German missions worldwide

    Estimated cost: Not yet confirmed

Processing: 15 working days (standard); may be extended to up to 45 days in individual cases. Apply at least 4 weeks before travel; no earlier than 6 months before the planned trip

Required documents for a business/trade fair visa typically include: valid passport (at least 3 months validity beyond planned return, 2 blank pages), completed and signed Schengen visa application form, two biometric passport photographs, invitation letter from a German business partner or stand confirmation from the trade fair organiser, trade fair ticket (printed e-ticket) for visitors, proof of accommodation for the entire stay, travel health insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage valid for all Schengen states, employer letter confirming position/salary/leave dates, bank statements for the last 3–6 months, and proof of sufficient means of subsistence. The visa fee for adults is €90 (approximately $98 USD); children aged 6–12 pay €45; children under 6 are free. Since 11 June 2024, the fee has been €90. The fee is non-refundable even if the visa is denied. Visa fees are waived for exhibitors at German trade fairs who present official trade fair accreditation. An official invitation letter from the trade fair organiser is generally no longer required for trade fair visa applications according to a German Federal Foreign Office directive of July 2013
