    Weather

Mid-December is San Francisco's cool, wet season: daytime highs typically land around 14-16 C (57-61 F), overnight lows near 8-9 C (46-48 F), and rain-bearing Pacific fronts are common, often as a wet morning followed by a clearer afternoon. Union Square sits in the foggy, windy part of the city, so a packable waterproof layer is more useful than a heavy winter coat. These are climatological planning bands, not a forecast - confirm the live forecast in the days before departure. Air quality during the captured event window showed a US AQI near 61 with PM2.5 around 14.6 micrograms per cubic metre from Open-Meteo - a public forecast, not an on-site measurement, so sensitive travelers should check local advisories.

    Plan for the climate

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) sell prepaid and eSIM data plans that most international visitors can activate before landing, which is usually cheaper than roaming for a five-day meeting. Hotel and conference-venue Wi-Fi is normally available but bandwidth tightens during large sessions, so download papers and program PDFs in advance. US power is 120 V at 60 Hz with Type A/B plugs, so visitors from Europe or Asia need a plug adapter and, for non-dual-voltage devices, a converter.

    Ride-hailing

    Taxis

    Public transit

    Car rentals

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Conference dress code

Business casual is standard for IEDM technical sessions, with many attendees in shirts and sweaters rather than suits. December weather means a layer you can remove indoors, where session rooms are heated.

    Tipping

US service norms apply: around 15-20 percent on restaurant bills and a dollar or two per drink at the bar. Taxi and rideshare tipping is customary but discretionary.

    Paying for transit

BART and Muni accept a Clipper card or contactless bank card at gates; cash is rarely needed. Load value before peak commute hours to avoid queues at ticket machines.

    December crowds

Union Square is a major holiday shopping district, so the pavements and garages are busier than in other months. Allow extra time when walking to the venue in the late afternoon.

    Poster and evening etiquette

Poster sessions are conversational: introduce yourself, state your group and interest, and keep questions short. Evening receptions are working events, so carry cards and follow up within a week.

    City terrain and safety

Downtown blocks are short but hilly, and some streets south of Union Square are less comfortable at night. Stay on lit main streets after evening sessions and use ride-hail if returning late.

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: SFO

Captured fare searches priced economy round trips into San Francisco International (SFO) for the 12-16 December 2026 window, with taxes and fees included for one adult and optional bag fees excluded. Tokyo-SFO showed roughly USD 1,255 and Singapore-SFO roughly USD 1,173 on nearby dates, while the exact 12-16 December fares were flagged as currently high; Dubai, London, New York and Sydney searches were flagged as typical, with Emirates nonstop Dubai-SFO about 16 hr 45 min and Sydney routings via Honolulu or Vancouver. Mid-December is a peak transpacific period, so booking early and checking Oakland (OAK) as an alternative gateway is prudent. All figures are captured indications, not quotes - confirm live fares before ticketing.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Primary gateways: San Francisco (SFO): Primary international gateway serving San Francisco.. Allow road or rail time to Hilton Union Square San Francisco; on-site parking is usually available at major exhibition venues.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near Hilton Union Square San Francisco: Union Square: Hilton San Francisco Union Square; Union Square, a few blocks from the Hilton venue: Parc 55 San Francisco - a Hilton Hotel; Union Square, near Mason Street: Hotel Nikko San Francisco.

Ride-hail: Uber and Lyft both operate across San Francisco, with pickup zones signposted at SFO and at most large hotels, and driverless Waymo service is also available in parts of the city for travelers who opt in through the app. Fares move with demand, so a 20:00 departure from a Union Square hotel after a session can cost noticeably more than mid-afternoon; check the quote before confirming. Tipping in the app is customary but optional. Confirm app availability and account setup for your home country before you fly.

Public transit: BART is the backbone for airport-to-downtown travel: the SFO station sits inside the airport and Powell Street station serves Union Square, a short walk from the Hilton venue. Within the city, Muni buses and trolley coaches cover the Powell, Geary and Market corridors, and the Powell-Hyde cable car starts at the Union Square turnaround for the run toward Fisherman's Wharf. Pay with a Clipper card or contactless bank card; a Muni single ride costs a few dollars and a day pass is available. December holiday crowds can slow surface routes, so allow buffer time before your first session of the day.

Parking: The Hilton San Francisco Union Square has an on-site garage serving the meeting and exhibition space, with hotel and public rates that are high by national standards and higher still during the December shopping season. Several independently operated garages sit within a few blocks of Union Square and may offer evening or daily rates; confirm height restrictions and whether in-and-out privileges exist. Most IEDM attendees staying in the Union Square cluster do not need a car, and BART from SFO removes the need to park on arrival.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

    Month: December 2026

    Temperature: Approx. 8-16 C (46-61 F): daytime highs near 14-16 C (57-61 F), overnight lows near 8-9 C (46-48 F). Climatological planning band for mid-December, not a live forecast - confirm before travel.

Seasonality: December falls in San Francisco's rainy season, when Pacific storm fronts bring multi-hour rain rather than steady drizzle, often followed by bright breezy afternoons. Totals vary a lot year to year, so plan for one or two wet days across a five-day meeting and keep indoor alternatives for evening plans. Union Square is also exposed and windy, which makes it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests.

Packing: Bring layers rather than a heavy coat: a warm mid-layer for air-conditioned session rooms, a packable waterproof shell for rain showers, and comfortable walking shoes for the hills between Union Square hotels and the venue. Add a small umbrella, a laptop sleeve rated for damp commutes, a Type A/B plug adapter, and a refillable bottle. If you are sensitive to air quality, carry any medication and check local advisories during the trip.

    Frequently asked

What is IEDM and who organizes it?
IEDM is the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting, an annual technical conference organized under the IEEE Electron Devices Society. It is where fabs, equipment suppliers, universities and research institutes present device-level results, and the 2026 edition runs 12-16 December in San Francisco.
    Where is IEDM 2026 held?
The 2026 meeting takes place at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square in the Union Square district of downtown San Francisco. The venue is roughly 120-180 m from a dense cluster of Union Square hotels, so most attendees can walk to sessions.
Is IEDM a trade show or a scientific conference?
IEDM is primarily a technical conference with plenary talks, oral sessions and poster sessions built around peer-reviewed device papers. It also hosts an exhibition where equipment, materials, metrology and EDA suppliers meet the device community, but the technical program is the core of the week.
What topics does the IEDM program cover?
Typical coverage includes advanced CMOS and gate-all-around transistors, memory technology such as DRAM, 3D NAND, MRAM, ReRAM and ferroelectric devices, interconnect and packaging, power and wide-bandgap devices, modeling and reliability, plus emerging areas such as neuromorphic, cryogenic and quantum device hardware.
How do I register for IEDM 2026 and what does it cost?
Registration is handled through the official site at ieee-iedm.org. Fees differ by attendee category such as IEEE member, non-member, student and exhibitor, so check the registration page for the current rates and deadlines rather than relying on second-hand figures.
Can students and early-career researchers attend IEDM?
Yes. Graduate students are a substantial part of the IEDM audience, often presenting first-author papers, and student registration categories are normally listed on the official registration page. Check ieee-iedm.org for the current student rates and any support programs.
How do accepted IEDM papers get published?
Accepted papers are presented in the technical program and collected in the IEDM proceedings published through IEEE, which is why the meeting functions as a citable record of device results as well as a live event. Authors should follow the official author instructions for formatting and release.
What is the best way to reach the venue from San Francisco International Airport?
BART runs from the SFO airport station into downtown San Francisco, and Powell Street station is a short walk or taxi hop from the Hilton San Francisco Union Square; the ride is typically around 30 minutes plus transfer time. A taxi or rideshare from SFO to Union Square is the door-to-door alternative, with journey time varying sharply with Bay Area traffic.
What is the weather like in San Francisco during the meeting?
Mid-December is the cool, wet part of the San Francisco year, with daytime highs typically around 14-16 C (57-61 F) and overnight lows near 8-9 C (46-48 F). Rain-bearing fronts are common in December, and Union Square can be windy, so pack a waterproof layer you can carry between hotels and the venue.
Do I need a visa to attend IEDM in the United States?
Most international attendees travel on a US B-1 business visitor visa, while travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries can generally use ESTA for short business visits. Rules differ by nationality, so confirm your status with the nearest US embassy or consulate well before booking.
What should I wear and how formal is IEDM?
Business casual is the norm for the technical sessions, and many attendees dress more casually on poster and evening days. December in San Francisco calls for layers and a rain-ready outer layer rather than heavy winter clothing.
What time zone and language apply at IEDM?
San Francisco is on Pacific Time (UTC-8 in December), and the conference language is English for all talks, posters and proceedings. Plan arrival a day early if you are crossing many time zones before your session.

    FEOL and BEOL
Front-end-of-line covers transistor formation; back-end-of-line covers the metal interconnect stack above it. IEDM program content is usually tagged to one or both, and interconnect scaling is a standing BEOL theme.
    9
    TCAD
Technology computer-aided design: physics-based simulation of fabrication steps and device behavior before silicon. TCAD results are commonly paired with measured data in IEDM device papers.
    10
    Heterogeneous integration
Combining separately fabricated dies or materials into one package to gain function or bandwidth. It is one of the fastest-growing topic areas at recent IEDM editions.
    11
    Chiplet
A small die designed to be assembled with others through a die-to-die interface rather than printing one large monolithic chip. Chiplet packaging papers usually appear alongside advanced packaging sessions.
    12
    3D NAND
Vertical-stacked flash memory where cells are built in layers rather than shrunk laterally. IEDM papers track layer counts, string architectures and program/erase reliability.
    13
    DRAM
Dynamic random-access memory built from a capacitor plus access transistor per cell. Capacitor scaling, retention and row-hammer style reliability are recurring IEDM memory topics.
    14
    MRAM
Magnetic random-access memory storing bits in magnetic tunnel junctions. Embedded MRAM for advanced-node compatibility is a regular IEDM subject.
    15
    ReRAM / RRAM
Resistive RAM that switches a filament or defect path in a dielectric. It appears in IEDM work on embedded non-volatile memory and in-memory computing arrays.
    16
    Ferroelectric FET (FeFET)
A transistor with a ferroelectric gate dielectric that retains polarization state, giving non-volatile behavior. FeFET and ferroelectric capacitor work is presented in memory and device-physics sessions.
    17
    Wide-bandgap semiconductor
Materials such as SiC and GaN with a larger bandgap than silicon, enabling higher voltage and frequency operation. Power and RF device papers on these platforms are a standing IEDM track.
    18
    Neuromorphic computing
Hardware that mimics neural computation using analog or event-driven device arrays instead of conventional clocked logic. IEDM papers cover synaptic devices, spiking circuits and system-level benchmarks.
    19
    Compute-in-memory
Performing arithmetic inside memory arrays to avoid moving data across the bus. It is usually demonstrated with ReRAM, MRAM or SRAM macros reported at the conference.
    20
    Cryogenic CMOS
Silicon circuits characterized and modeled for operation near a few kelvin, typically to control quantum bits. It links the quantum-device and classical-circuit communities at IEDM.
    21
    Silicon photonics
Optical waveguides, modulators and detectors integrated on silicon for chip-to-chip or intra-datacenter links. IEDM photonics papers emphasize co-integration with CMOS.
    22
    Reliability (BTI, TDDB, electromigration)
Wear-out mechanisms: bias temperature instability shifts thresholds, time-dependent dielectric breakdown kills oxides, and electromigration opens metal lines. Reliability data is often the deciding evidence in IEDM integration papers.
    23
    Metrology
Measurement of dimensions, composition and defects during or after fabrication. New metrology approaches are frequently required before a new device can be manufactured, which is why tool vendors exhibit.
    24
    Plenary, oral and poster sessions
The three presentation formats used for accepted IEDM papers: invited plenary talks, timed oral slots and interactive poster sessions. Authors should check the official site for the format assigned to their paper.
