    Market context

Key market insights, trends, news and related events to help you understand the bigger picture.

    Asia-Pacific / Global

    Why it matters

ICIF China 2026 matters because it is the single largest gathering of China's chemical value chain in the opening year of the 15th Five-Year Plan. China now accounts for 42% of global chemical output and is expected to provide 86% of new global chemical capacity in the coming years. However, the industry faces structural oversupply with profit margins at 10-year lows, making this event a critical platform for both procurement and strategic repositioning. The debut of 168 specialized and innovative enterprises, alongside cross-industry participants like Unitree Technology, signals a shift from scale-driven to innovation-driven growth. For international buyers and suppliers, the event offers direct access to China's import substitution progress in high-end materials and a concentrated view of the country's green and digital transformation.

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

    Anti-Involution Policy Reshaping Chemical Supply

China's anti-involution drive, which escalated from 'comprehensive rectification' to 'in-depth rectification' of involution-style competition, is accelerating the exit of outdated capacity and improving supply-side dynamics. Fixed asset investment growth in the domestic chemical industry has slowed markedly since 2024. In April 2026, the Central Committee and State Council issued Opinions on Higher-Level, Higher-Quality Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction and the Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Comprehensive Evaluation and Assessment Measures, establishing a rigid assessment system that signals a new phase of stricter carbon constraints for the chemical sector.

    Source
    02

Geopolitical Conflict and China's Supply Chain Resilience

The Middle East conflict in early 2026 disrupted global energy and feedstock supply chains, raising costs for petrochemical producers worldwide. However, China's chemical industry has demonstrated strong supply chain resilience, with domestic producers gaining market share as European chemical capacity continues to exit. More than 60% of global ethylene capacity additions from 2020 to 2025 came from China, yet the country still imported 6 million metric tons of ethylene in 2025. China now accounts for 42% of global chemical output.

    Source
    03

    Structural Oversupply and Profit Squeeze

China's petrochemical industry faces a paradox: capacity continues to expand while profits hit 10-year lows. Industry leaders at the World Petrochemical Conference noted that an increase in scale does not equal more competitiveness, with operating profit margins at only 4.5%. The Guide for the 15th Five-Year Plan period identifies structural contradictions as a major challenge, with imbalance between supply and demand in traditional products leading to insufficient profitability.

    Source
    04

    Green Transition and Dual-Carbon Compliance

2026 marks the first year China fully shifts from energy-consumption dual control to carbon-emission dual control. A national carbon market expansion includes petrochemicals as the next sector. The five-ministry Three-Year Action Plan for Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction in Key Industries (2026-2028) sets specific tasks for refining, ethylene, synthetic ammonia, and methanol. About 19% of the Chinese petrochemical industry's energy consumption came from renewable energy in 2025, set to rise to 30% by 2030.

    Source
    05

    High-End Materials and Import Substitution

China's chemical new materials self-sufficiency rate rose from 64% in 2020 to 82% in 2025 and is expected to reach 85% in 2026. Electron chemicals, functional films, and engineering plastics have progressed rapidly, while high-end polyolefins, specialty synthetic rubber, and high-performance fibers still have gaps. The 15th Five-Year Plan identifies new chemical materials as a long-term strategic direction, with focus on semiconductor materials, OLED materials, and COC materials.

    Source
    06

AI and Robotics Entering Chemical Manufacturing

Chemical companies are increasingly adopting AI, digital twins, and robotics for safety and efficiency. At ICIF China 2026, Unitree Technology and other robotics companies exhibit explosion-proof and inspection robots for chemical safety scenarios. The 9th Smart Chem Conference covers intelligent factory design, edge analytics, and robot operations.

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Business Meeting Etiquette

When meeting Chinese business counterparts for the first time, a firm handshake is standard. Business cards should be exchanged with both hands and examined before being put away. Address counterparts by their family name with the appropriate title, such as Mr. Wang or Ms. Li. Punctuality is important and arriving on time shows respect.

    Negotiation Style

Chinese business culture emphasizes relationship building before transactional discussions. Initial meetings may focus on establishing trust and shared interests rather than immediate deal terms. Decisions may involve multiple layers of approval. Bringing detailed technical documentation and clear product specifications helps accelerate discussions.

    Language and Communication

While many senior Chinese chemical executives speak English, having a Mandarin-speaking interpreter or bilingual product literature is valuable. Important documents such as contracts and technical specifications should be prepared in both Chinese and English. WeChat is the primary business communication tool in China and is used to share contacts, files, and updates.

    Dining and Gift Customs

Business banquets are common during trade fairs. The host typically orders a variety of dishes to be shared family-style. Toasting is common at formal dinners. Gifts are appreciated but should be modest; Chinese hosts may decline a gift several times before accepting, which is a polite ritual rather than a true refusal.

    Booth Visit Etiquette

When visiting exhibitor booths, it is customary to introduce yourself and your company briefly before asking detailed questions. Collecting business cards early in the conversation helps both parties remember names and titles. Chinese exhibitors appreciate follow-up contact via WeChat rather than email for faster response times.

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

Destination: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)

Direct flights to Shanghai Pudong (PVG) are available from major international hubs. Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) mainly serves domestic routes but has some international connections. Book flights 2-3 months in advance for the best fares, especially if travelling in late September around the Mid-Autumn Festival (September 25-27, 2026).

    Visa

Many business visitors to ICIF China 2026 may not need a visa. Ordinary passport holders from 50 countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, exchange and transit, and this policy explicitly covers attendance at exhibitions and conferences. Nationals of 57 countries transiting to a third country or region may stay up to 10 days visa-free. Visitors who do not qualify for visa-free entry should apply for an M (business) visa and can request an invitation letter from the ICIF China Organizing Committee through the official website's Download Center. A port visa (visa on arrival) may be available for urgent business situations with an invitation from a Chinese company, but eligibility is limited and should be confirmed with the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate in advance.

Processing: 4 working days for regular M visa processing; express service available. Visa-free entry requires no application.

The ICIF China 2026 official website provides a 'Visa Invitation Letter Application Instructions and Required Documents' file in its Download Center. Applicants should apply well in advance of travel. Visa fees vary by nationality and number of entries. The M visa typically allows a 30-day stay and is valid for three months. Visa-free entry requires a valid ordinary passport for the entire duration of stay. Border inspection authorities may verify the purpose of stay.

Best day to visit: Day 2 (16 September)

Day 2 typically offers the fullest exhibitor presence, as all booths are fully set up and staffed after the opening day. Many conference sessions run across all three days, but Day 2 often has the densest programme of technical forums and matchmaking events, and visitor traffic is more manageable than the opening morning rush.

    T-90

Verify whether you need a visa for China based on your nationality — Nationals of 50 countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Others need an M business visa. Apply at least 6-8 weeks before travel. Official policy details at the National Immigration Administration website.

    Should you go?

Answer 8 quick questions to find out whether ICIF China 2026 is right for you to visit, exhibit, or skip. Your answers are scored across three outcomes: Visit, Exhibit, and Skip.

    QUESTION 1 OF 8

What is your primary role in the chemical industry?

    Decision matrix

Compare participation options side by side to choose the best fit for your objectives.

    visit

You have a clear sourcing or networking objective, your product interests match the event's nine categories, and you can travel to Shanghai during 15-17 September 2026.

    Best for

Procurement managers, sourcing specialists, R&D professionals, and business development executives from chemical, petrochemical, energy, and downstream industries seeking suppliers, market intelligence, or partnership opportunities in China and Asia-Pacific.

    Min. budget

    $1,500.00

    Timeline

4-8 weeks for visa (if required), flights, and accommodation. Registration is free and can be completed online up to the event date, but early registration is recommended for badge collection and group benefits.

    Risks

Large venue with four halls (E4-E7) can be overwhelming without a pre-planned route or exhibitor shortlist

International travel to Shanghai requires visa arrangements for some nationalities, though 50 countries have visa-free entry for up to 30 days

Metro and taxi can be crowded during peak exhibition hours, so allow extra travel time

September weather in Shanghai is warm and humid with occasional rain, which may affect comfort during outdoor transit

    exhibit

You have a product or technology that addresses China's chemical industry needs, a budget for booth space and travel, and staff capable of engaging Chinese-speaking or English-speaking buyers effectively.

    Best for

Chemical manufacturers, equipment suppliers, engineering firms, smart manufacturing solution providers, and fine chemical companies targeting the Chinese and Asia-Pacific markets. Particularly suited for companies with import substitution capabilities, specialized and innovative enterprise status, or new-to-market products.

    Min. budget

    $2,500.00

    Timeline

6-12 months for booth design, marketing campaign, visa, and logistics. Exhibitor registration deadline is 30 August 2026. Booth setup runs 13-14 September 2026.

    Risks

Booth costs range from RMB 10,800 to RMB 16,800 per 9 sqm standard booth, plus travel and accommodation for staff

Booth allocation follows first-apply, first-pay, first-confirm principle, so late applications may get less favourable locations

Competition for visitor attention is high with over 2,400 exhibitors across the industry week

Chinese business culture values relationship building, so exhibitors should plan for follow-up and WeChat-based communication

Return on investment depends heavily on pre-show marketing and lead qualification; walk-up traffic alone may not justify cost

    skip

China is not a target market for your business, your product focus does not align with the event's categories, or international travel to Shanghai is not feasible within your current constraints. Consider following the event's post-show reports and exhibitor news as a lower-cost alternative.

    Best for

Companies or professionals whose primary market is outside China and Asia-Pacific, those with product categories not covered by the event, or individuals with travel constraints that make international attendance impractical.

    Timeline

    Not applicable.

    Risks

Missing potential supplier or partner connections that could benefit your business in the medium to long term

Staying unaware of China's rapid advances in chemical new materials, smart manufacturing, and green low-carbon technologies

Losing competitive intelligence to peers who attend and gain early access to new products and market trends
