    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Language

German is the everyday language in Hamburg, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and the university hospital environment. At a GTH congress, scientific sessions and abstract presentations are largely in English while some society and training formats may be held in German, so check the session language in the online programme.

    Money and payment

The currency is the euro (EUR). Cards are accepted in most hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but some bakeries, kiosks and small Imbisse are still cash-only, so keep a few euros on hand. Card terminals usually accept contactless and may ask for PIN rather than signature.

    Opening hours and Sundays

Shops in Hamburg generally close on Sundays, apart from train station shops, petrol stations and some convenience stores. Plan grocery or pharmacy purchases on Saturday: German pharmacies (Apotheken) work on a rota system, so check the emergency pharmacy notice on any pharmacy door if you need one on a Sunday.

    Punctuality and meeting culture

Sessions start on time and doors may close once a talk has begun. Arrive a few minutes early for plenary lectures and workshops, and keep questions in the discussion block rather than interrupting the speaker - the chair will normally hold time for this.

    Tipping and restaurants

Service is included in German restaurant bills, but rounding up by about 5-10 percent is customary for good service. Tell the server the total amount you want to pay when handing over card or cash rather than leaving coins on the table.

    Transport etiquette

Hamburg's hvv network runs on trust-based ticketing with occasional inspectors - validate or activate your ticket before boarding and keep it until you exit. Keep the left side of escalators free, and note that S-Bahn and U-Bahn services run frequently but thin out after midnight on weeknights.

    Weather and dress

Early March in Hamburg is late winter: wind from the Elbe, frequent rain showers and temperatures that swing between near freezing and about 8 degrees Celsius. Local dress is practical rather than formal - a waterproof jacket and shoes that cope with wet pavements matter more than a suit, and congress halls are heated.

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

Round-trip economy searches for 2-6 March 2027 show same-day connections to Hamburg HAM from New York JFK (British Airways via London Heathrow, Air France/Delta via Paris CDG, KLM via Amsterdam, about 9-12 hours total) and from London LHR (short nonstop hops of roughly 1 hour 45 minutes). Tokyo NRT and Sydney SYD searches returned no usable fares at capture time, so book those legs early and check live prices; fares include taxes and fees for one adult and do not include bags or optional charges.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Use the nearest international airport serving Hamburg; Metro, train or taxi links are typically available to the venue district.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near Congress Center Hamburg: Hamburg city centre: Premier Inn Hamburg City (Zentrum) Hotel; Alster: Premier Inn Hamburg City Alster Hotel; Klostertor / city centre edge: Premier Inn Hamburg City Klostertor Hotel.

Ride-hail: Ride-hailing apps are commonly used in Hamburg; confirm local availability before travel.

Public transit: Hamburg's public transport is run by the hvv network, covering U-Bahn, S-Bahn, regional trains, Metrobus routes and the harbour ferries. For the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH), the two most useful stops are Dammtor station (S-Bahn S21/S31 plus regional and long-distance trains, directly beside the venue) and Stephansplatz (U-Bahn U1), both a short walk from the CCH entrances. From Hamburg Airport (HAM), take S-Bahn S1 from the terminal station into the city and change at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof for S21/S31 to Dammtor, or walk from Hauptbahnhof if the weather is fair. From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the S-Bahn ride to Dammtor is one stop. Single journeys inside the city typically cost roughly EUR 2-4 depending on zone, with day and multi-day tickets available in the hvv app and at machines; children travel free on many hvv tickets. Approximate fares only - confirm live prices before travel. Services run frequently from early morning until around midnight, with limited night buses afterwards, so check the last connection if you are attending an evening event.

Parking: On-site parking is available at Congress Center Hamburg; confirm daily rates and hall access on the organiser or venue site.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

    Month: March 2027

Seasonality: Early March falls in Hamburg's late-winter period; check a forecast closer to the congress dates for rain and temperature expectations, as this capture pack does not contain a seasonal climate statement.

Packing: Pack for cool early-March weather in Hamburg with layers and rain protection; confirm the live forecast before departure.

    Plan your trip

    Planning

Best day to visit: Day 2 (mid-show)

Mid-show days at GTH usually combine full exhibitor attendance with scheduled B2B meetings, before early pack-down on the final day.

    T-1

    FAQs & glossary

    Answers

    Frequently asked

What is the GTH Congress and who organises it?
The GTH Congress is the annual scientific meeting of the Gesellschaft für Thrombose- und Hämostaseforschung (GTH), the German society for thrombosis and haemostasis research. It brings together clinicians, laboratory specialists and scientists working on coagulation, bleeding disorders and thrombotic disease. Programme details, registration and abstract information are published on the official site, gth-congress.org.
When and where is GTH 2027 held?
GTH 2027 is scheduled for 2-5 March 2027 in Hamburg, Germany, with the scientific programme based at the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) next to Dammtor station and Planten un Blomen park. Confirm the final venue, hall allocation and any satellite session locations in the official programme before booking travel.
    Who should attend GTH 2027?
The meeting is built for people who make coagulation decisions: haemostaseologists, haematologists, angiologists and vascular physicians, laboratory medicine specialists, transfusion medicine physicians, haemophilia treatment centre teams, obstetricians managing thrombotic risk in pregnancy, anticoagulation pharmacists and nurses, plus laboratory and clinical researchers in thrombosis and haemostasis. Industry scientists working on anticoagulants, factor concentrates and coagulation diagnostics also attend.
How do I register for GTH 2027 and what does it cost?
Registration is handled through the official congress website, gth-congress.org, where the fee categories (for example members, non-members, trainees and students, and day tickets) are published. Fees, early-bird cut-offs and cancellation terms are set by the organiser, so check the registration page directly rather than relying on third-party listings.
Can I submit an abstract to GTH 2027?
Yes, the congress runs an abstract programme with a dedicated abstract section on the official site (gth-congress.org/abstract). Submission windows, formatting rules, word limits and notification dates change each edition, so confirm the current deadline on that page before you plan a submission.
Will there be an industry exhibition at GTH 2027?
Haemostasis congresses of this type normally include an industry exhibition and sponsored symposia alongside the scientific sessions, covering coagulation analysers and reagents, anticoagulant and factor therapies, and laboratory software. Confirm the confirmed exhibitor list, opening hours and exhibition floor plan on the organiser site closer to the event.
What language are the sessions in?
The GTH is a German-speaking society, so expect a mixed programme: scientific sessions and abstract presentations in English, with German used in some society and training formats. Check the language of each session in the online programme if you are travelling specifically for one topic block.
How do I get from Hamburg Airport to the Congress Center Hamburg?
Hamburg Airport (HAM) has its own S-Bahn station on the S1 line. Take the S1 towards the city and change at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof or continue to Dammtor, which is directly adjacent to the Congress Center Hamburg. The journey is roughly 25-30 minutes plus transfer time; buy an hvv single or day ticket and confirm live fares and any engineering works before travelling.
How do I reach the venue by U-Bahn or S-Bahn?
The Congress Center Hamburg sits between Dammtor station (S-Bahn S21/S31, regional and long-distance trains) and Stephansplatz U-Bahn station (U1). From the city centre, either is a short walk to the CCH entrances. Hamburg's hvv network covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries, and single, day and multi-day tickets can be bought in the hvv app or at machines.
Do I need a visa to attend GTH 2027 in Germany?
Germany is in the Schengen area. EU/EEA and many other passport holders can enter visa-free for short stays, while other nationalities need a Schengen short-stay visa applied for in advance at the German mission responsible for their place of residence. Check the German Federal Foreign Office visa pages for your nationality, allow several weeks for processing, and contact the organiser if a letter supporting your visa application is required.
What should I pack for Hamburg in early March?
Expect late-winter conditions: daytime highs around 7-8 degrees Celsius, night-time lows near freezing, rain at any time and wind coming off the Elbe. Bring a waterproof outer layer, layers you can shed inside heated congress halls, and comfortable shoes, since the CCH halls and the Dammtor/Stephansplatz connections involve walking.

    Glossary

    1
    Haemostasis
The physiological process that stops bleeding after vessel injury, balancing platelet plug formation, coagulation factor activation and fibrin formation against natural anticoagulant and fibrinolytic pathways. Abnormal haemostasis can present as bleeding or as thrombosis.
    2
    Thrombosis
Formation of a blood clot inside a vessel or heart chamber while blood is still flowing, obstructing flow. Arterial thrombosis (myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke) and venous thrombosis are driven by different mechanisms and managed differently.
    3
    Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
The combined term for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), usually of the legs, and pulmonary embolism (PE), where part of a clot embolises into the pulmonary arteries. VTE is the clinical focus of most anticoagulation research presented at haemostasis congresses.
    4
    Anticoagulation
Drug therapy that reduces the clotting tendency of blood, used to treat existing thrombosis and to prevent it in atrial fibrillation, after orthopaedic surgery or in thrombophilia. Main classes are heparins, vitamin K antagonists, direct oral anticoagulants and, in specific settings, parenteral direct thrombin inhibitors.
    5
    Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)
Oral agents that inhibit a single coagulation enzyme directly, either factor Xa (apixaban, edoxaban, rivaroxaban) or thrombin (dabigatran). They need no routine INR monitoring, but dose adjustment depends on renal function, age, weight and interacting drugs.
    6
Vitamin K antagonist (VKA) and INR
Warfarin and phenprocoumon block vitamin K recycling, reducing functional factors II, VII, IX and X. Therapy is monitored with the international normalised ratio (INR), a standardised prothrombin time that allows results to be compared between laboratories and reagent lots.
    7
    Von Willebrand disease (VWD)
The most common inherited bleeding disorder, caused by quantitative or qualitative defects of von Willebrand factor, which mediates platelet adhesion and carries factor VIII in plasma. Diagnosis combines bleeding history, VWF antigen, VWF activity and factor VIII testing.
    8
    Haemophilia A and B
X-linked bleeding disorders caused by deficiency of factor VIII (A) or factor IX (B), historically treated with factor concentrates and increasingly with extended half-life products and non-factor therapies that rebalance haemostasis.
    9
    Thrombophilia
An inherited or acquired predisposition to thrombosis. Inherited forms include factor V Leiden, prothrombin G20210A, and deficiencies of antithrombin, protein C or protein S; acquired forms include antiphospholipid syndrome and myeloproliferative neoplasms.
    10
    Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
An acquired autoimmune thrombophilia defined by thrombosis or pregnancy morbidity plus persistent antiphospholipid antibodies (lupus anticoagulant, anti-cardiolipin, anti-beta-2-glycoprotein I). Lupus anticoagulant detection is technically demanding because the antibody prolongs phospholipid-dependent clotting times in vitro.
    11
    Platelet function testing
Laboratory methods that assess how well platelets adhere, activate and aggregate, including light transmission aggregometry, impedance aggregometry, flow cytometry and platelet function analysers used to monitor P2Y12 inhibition or detect inherited platelet disorders.
    12
    Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)
An immune reaction to heparin in which antibodies against platelet factor 4-heparin complexes activate platelets, causing thrombocytopenia and a paradoxically high thrombosis risk. Management is immediate heparin cessation and alternative anticoagulation, not platelet transfusion.
    13
    Fibrinolysis and thrombolysis
Fibrinolysis is the body's own plasmin-mediated clot breakdown; thrombolysis is its pharmacological acceleration, used in acute ischaemic stroke, massive pulmonary embolism and some thrombosed catheters or prostheses. Antifibrinolytics such as tranexamic acid act in the opposite direction.
    14
    Coagulation factor concentrate
A plasma-derived or recombinant product containing one or more clotting factors, used to replace deficiency in haemophilia or rare bleeding disorders and, in some protocols, as a haemostatic agent in major bleeding.
    15
    Thrombin generation assay (TGA)
A global coagulation test that measures the amount of thrombin produced over time in plasma after activation, giving an overall picture of procoagulant and anticoagulant balance rather than a single factor level. Used in research and increasingly in specialised diagnostic laboratories.
    16
    Point-of-care (POC) coagulation testing
Devices used outside the central laboratory - for example viscoelastic tests such as thromboelastography or rotational thromboelastometry in cardiac and trauma surgery, and capillary INR meters in anticoagulation clinics - to shorten the time between sampling and a treatment decision.
