    Weather

GTJ 2027 runs in March, early spring on the Chiba and Tokyo Bay coast. Expect cool, breezy days off the bay with a mix of clear spells and showery days; mornings and evenings feel distinctly colder than midday. Climatological bands for early-to-mid March in Chiba are roughly 10-15 C by day and 3-7 C overnight, which is a planning band rather than a forecast. Check a local forecast for the show week before you pack.

    Plan for the climate

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

Japan has wide 4G and 5G coverage in Chiba and the Tokyo Bay area, and Makuhari Messe is inside that coverage. Options for business visitors are a travel eSIM installed before departure, a short-term data SIM from airport counters, or pocket Wi-Fi rental collected at Narita or Haneda. Public Wi-Fi exists at the venue and at major stations but should not be relied on for large uploads or client calls; treat it as a backup. Confirm venue Wi-Fi access rules and any password issued to exhibitors with the organiser, and set up roaming or an eSIM before leaving the airport so maps and train apps work on arrival.

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Getting around Chiba and Tokyo

Kaihin-Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyo Line is the usual rail approach to Makuhari Messe, and the walk from the station to the halls is signposted in English. Suica or PASMO IC cards work across JR, subway and bus services and save time at ticket gates; cash is still useful for smaller eateries and some local buses.

    Business etiquette at the show

Japanese exhibitors typically exchange meishi (business cards) at the start of a meeting; carry a card case and present and receive cards with both hands, taking a moment to read the card. Punctuality for scheduled booth appointments is expected, and a brief self-introduction before technical questions is standard.

    Language and signage

Most GTJ exhibitor staff speak Japanese; English-speaking staff are common at international machine tool, abrasive and metrology suppliers. Venue signage at Makuhari Messe is bilingual, and station signage on the Keiyo Line includes English, so navigation is manageable with basic preparation.

    Tipping and payments

Tipping is not customary in Japan and can cause awkwardness. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants in Makuhari and central Chiba, but small eateries and some kiosks may be cash only, so keep a reasonable amount of yen on hand.

    Eating around Makuhari New Town

Makuhari New Town has large shopping complexes and hotel restaurants near the venue, but tables fill quickly during show lunch hours. Eating at off-peak times or buying from station-area convenience stores is a practical way to keep a tight appointment schedule.

    Flights

    Destination: NRT

Fly into Narita (NRT) where possible for the shortest transfer to Makuhari Messe, with Haneda (HND) as a good alternative if your itinerary includes Tokyo. Captured route research shows direct Seoul-Tokyo options on Jin Air, Jeju Air, Air Premia and Peach Aviation with 2-3 hour flight times, direct Singapore services on ZIPAIR, ANA, Scoot and JAL, a London nonstop on British Airways, JAL, SWISS and Finnair, an Emirates nonstop of about 9.5 hours from Dubai, one-stop routings from New York via ICN or TPE at roughly 21-24 hours, and Jetstar one-stop options from Sydney. Live fares were not captured for these routes, so price them yourself rather than relying on any figure here. Book early: March is a busy shoulder season in Japan and hotel plus flight inventory tightens around trade fair weeks.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Primary gateways: Tokyo (NRT): Primary international gateway serving Chiba/Tokyo.. Allow road or rail time to Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex; on-site parking is usually available at major exhibition venues.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex: Makuhari Toyosuna, Chiba: JR East Hotel Mets Premier Makuharitoyosuna; Tokyo Bay Makuhari, Chiba: APA Hotel & Resort Tokyo Bay Makuhari; Chiba Station: Daiwa Roynet Hotel Chiba Station.

Ride-hail: Ride-hailing works in the Chiba and Tokyo Bay area through apps such as GO and S.RIDE, with international apps available in parts of Tokyo; coverage around Makuhari New Town can be thinner than in central Tokyo, and street-hailing at the venue taxi ranks is often faster after the halls close. Expect metered fares with a flag fall of a few hundred yen, and pay by card or IC where the vehicle accepts it. Confirm app availability and any airport pickup rules before travel.

Public transit: The JR Keiyo Line is the backbone for Makuhari Messe: Kaihin-Makuhari Station is the stop, with a flat 5-10 minute walk to the halls through the covered deck and clear English signage. From Tokyo Station the ride is roughly 30-40 minutes and around JPY 580-660 one way; from Chiba Station it is a few minutes and roughly JPY 200-250. Local buses cover the wider Makuhari New Town and connect hotels that are not walkable. Suica or PASMO IC cards work on JR, subway and buses, and a mobile IC card in your phone wallet saves queueing at ticket machines. Fares and timings are approximate, so confirm on a live timetable before travelling.

Parking: Makuhari Messe operates large on-site car parks around the halls, and parking is normally available for trade fair days, with approximate tariffs of JPY 1,000-2,000 per entry or day; confirm the current rate and which car park serves your hall with the venue. Capacity fills early on busy show mornings, and the walk from the outer lots can take 10-15 minutes, so plan to arrive well before the opening. Alternative options are station-area paid parking near Kaihin-Makuhari and Chiba Station combined with the JR Keiyo Line. Exact bay allocation, tariffs and any exhibitor permits should be confirmed with the organiser or venue before you drive.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

    Month: March 2027

Temperature: Early-to-mid March in Chiba and the Tokyo Bay area typically runs around 10-15 C by day and 3-7 C overnight, a cool spring band rather than a warm one; the halls and trains are heated, so layering works better than a single heavy coat.

Seasonality: March is a shoulder season with occasional showery days and gusty bay winds; this is not the June-July rainy season, but a compact umbrella is useful for the walk between Kaihin-Makuhari Station and the halls. Daylight is increasing through the month, so early evening exits are still light.

Packing: Pack a light jacket or coat for cool mornings and evenings, a compact umbrella for showery days, comfortable walking shoes for the Kaihin-Makuhari Station to Makuhari Messe walk and for hall-to-hall distances, and business-casual layers that work in heated halls. Bring a card case for meishi, a phone wallet with a Suica or PASMO card loaded, and a compact bag for catalogues and sample parts.

    FAQs & glossary

    Answers

    Frequently asked

What is GTJ (Grinding Technology Japan) and what is exhibited?
GTJ is a Japanese trade exhibition focused on grinding and the processes around it: grinding machines, abrasive and superabrasive wheels, dressing and truing systems, coolants and filtration, balancing and spindle technology, and the measuring equipment used to verify ground parts. It is a specialist show for the grinding process rather than a broad machine tool fair.
When and where is GTJ 2027 held?
The 2027 edition is scheduled for March 2027 at Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in the Makuhari New Town district of Chiba, on Tokyo Bay. Confirm the exact hall and daily opening hours on the official site gtj-expo.jp before booking travel.
How do I get from Narita Airport to Makuhari Messe?
Narita (NRT) is the usual international gateway. The rail option is a JR service with a transfer to the JR Keiyo Line and a stop at Kaihin-Makuhari Station, which is a short walk or venue bus ride from the halls; airport limousine buses also run toward Makuhari New Town hotels. Approximate one-way rail cost is JPY 1,200-1,700 per person, with taxi around JPY 18,000-26,000. Confirm live fares and timetables before travel.
Do I need to register in advance to attend GTJ?
Trade fairs at Makuhari Messe normally require registration and a badge, and advance online registration is usually faster than registering on arrival. Check gtj-expo.jp for the current registration route and any documents requested from trade visitors. A general admission price of JPY 2,000 appears in the captured listing data, so confirm the current ticket and pre-registration terms on the official site.
Is GTJ open to the general public or trade only?
GTJ is built around trade visitors: process engineers, machine shop and plant manufacturing staff, abrasive buyers, and distributors. Visitors are normally asked to register with a company name and role, so bring a business card and company details for the badge desk.
Which hotel area is most practical for GTJ at Makuhari Messe?
Hotels in Makuhari New Town, around Kaihin-Makuhari Station and Tokyo Bay Makuhari, are the closest and allow walking or a very short ride to the halls. Chiba Station hotels are cheaper and connect by JR Keiyo Line in a few minutes. Approximate midscale night rates in the Makuhari area are JPY 20,000-28,000 during trade fair weeks, so reserve early.
What language is used at GTJ?
The show is held in Japan and most exhibitor staff speak Japanese, with English commonly available at international machine, wheel and measuring equipment suppliers. Makuhari Messe signage and JR station signage on the Keiyo Line are bilingual, and having key specification questions written down helps in booth conversations.
Can I visit GTJ and other Tokyo area shows in the same trip?
Makuhari Messe hosts several concurrent exhibitions during busy weeks, and central Tokyo venues are roughly 30-45 minutes away on the JR Keiyo Line and connecting services. Build a buffer day if you plan supplier visits in Chiba or Tokyo around the show.
What should I bring to a grinding technology show?
Bring part drawings or tolerance and surface finish targets for the components you grind, plus current wheel specification and cycle time data. Suppliers can then respond with concrete wheel grades, dressing intervals and coolant recommendations instead of general brochures.
Do I need a visa to attend GTJ in Japan?
Japan operates a short-term stay framework with visa-free entry for many nationalities and a visa route for others. Rules depend on nationality and purpose of visit, so check the latest requirements with the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country well before March 2027.

    Glossary

    1
    Grinding
A machining process that removes material with a rotating abrasive wheel made of bonded grit, used to bring hardened or precision parts to tight dimensional and surface-finish tolerances rather than to rough out metal.
    2
    Creep feed grinding
A deep-cut grinding method that takes the full depth of material in one slow pass with a soft, open wheel structure; common for turbine roots, broaches and hardened tooling, and a regular theme among machine builders at GTJ.
    3
    Centerless grinding
Grinding of a workpiece supported on a work rest between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel, used for high-volume pins, shafts and bearing components without centering the part.
    4
    CBN (cubic boron nitride)
A superabrasive grain second only to diamond in hardness, preferred for grinding hardened steels and high-speed steels where a conventional aluminium oxide wheel would wear too fast.
    5
    Vitrified bond
A glass-like bond that holds abrasive grain in a wheel; it gives a rigid, porous wheel with good form-holding, and is the bond most often discussed when visitors compare wheel life at the show.
    6
    Dressing and truing
Dressing sharpens or opens the cutting face of a wheel; truing restores its geometry. Rotary diamond dressers, CNC dressing units and in-machine dressing cycles are a core comparison point for GTJ buyers.
    7
    Grinding burn
Surface and subsurface damage caused by excessive heat at the grinding zone, detectable by nital etching or Barkhausen noise measurement; a main reason visitors look at coolant delivery, nozzle design and wheel specification together.
    8
    In-process gauging
Measurement taken during the grinding cycle, typically with a gauging head on the machine, so the control closes the cycle at the target size instead of relying on operator intervention.
    9
    Superabrasives
Diamond and CBN abrasives used in resin, metal, vitrified and electroplated bonds; the segment where wheel makers at GTJ compete hardest on grain quality and coating.
    10
    Grit size and structure
The abrasive grain size designation (FEPA or JIS scales) and the wheel structure number that sets grain-to-bond ratio; together they define how freely a wheel cuts and how much form it holds.
    11
    MQL (minimum quantity lubrication)
A near-dry coolant strategy that delivers a small, precisely aimed oil mist to the grinding zone, used where coolant disposal cost and environmental load matter.
    12
    Honing and lapping
Finishing operations that follow grinding: honing uses bonded stones on a rotating, reciprocating tool for bores such as cylinder liners, while lapping uses loose abrasive slurry for flatness and surface finish.
    13
    Wheel balancing
Correction of mass distribution in a grinding wheel and spindle assembly to suppress vibration and chatter; balancers and automatic balancing heads are shown alongside high-speed spindles.
    14
    Spindle and wheel head
The rotating assembly that carries the grinding wheel. Stiffness, bearing type, thermal growth and maximum wheel speed are the usual specification lines visitors compare between machine builders.
