    Weather

Late February in Columbia, South Carolina sits at the tail of winter: expect mild, often sunny afternoons in the 16-18 C (61-65 F) range and cold mornings near 2-6 C (36-43 F), with passing fronts that can drop a raw, windy day in between. Rain is realistic rather than rare, so pack a light rain shell and layers for the walk between parking and the exhibit halls, and wear shoes you can stand in for hours. The RV displays themselves are indoors at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds, so weather mainly affects arrival, parking and any outdoor display space. Check a local forecast in the week before travel rather than relying on seasonal averages.

    Fairground setting

The Columbia RV Expo runs in the South Carolina State Fairgrounds exhibition halls, a large state fair site with multiple gates and long walks from outer parking. Wear comfortable shoes, note which gate serves your hall, and allow 10-15 minutes from car to entrance on a busy Saturday.

Dealer sales style in the Midlands

Expect friendly, relationship-driven sales conversations rather than hard presale pressure. Ask for the out-the-door number in writing, including freight, dealer prep, documentation fees and taxes, so quotes from different dealers compare on the same basis.

    Family attendance norms

Consumer RV shows in South Carolina draw families, and under-18s enter free with a paying adult at this expo. Strollers are common in the aisles, and children are generally welcome to climb through display units when dealers invite it, so supervise closely around steps and slides.

    Money and payments

The currency is the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including gate admission and dealer deposits, though a little cash is useful for parking and small accessory booths. Sales tax is added at the point of sale rather than shown in display prices.

    Tipping and everyday etiquette

Restaurant servers expect a 15-20 percent tip and bar staff roughly a dollar per drink; rideshare tips are optional but customary. Small talk about college football, barbecue and lake weekends is a normal opener in Columbia - the region has strong University of South Carolina affiliations.

    Language and accessibility

Business is conducted in English. Many display RVs have entry steps and narrow doorways, so ask exhibitors about step-free access and seating if mobility is a concern, and confirm accessible parking with the organiser before arrival.

    FAQs & glossary

    Answers

    Frequently asked

When and where is the Columbia RV Expo in 2027?
The expo is scheduled for 26-28 February 2027 in Columbia, South Carolina, using the South Carolina State Fairgrounds exhibition halls. Check columbiarvexpo.com for the confirmed hall, gate and daily opening hours before you travel, since gate assignments and show hours can be adjusted close to the opening day.
How much does admission to the Columbia RV Expo cost?
Gate admission is USD 10 per person, and the show coupon brings it down to USD 8. Children under 18 enter free with a paying adult, which makes it a practical family outing. Confirm the current coupon source on the organiser website before you go, and note that parking and any dealer deposits are separate.
Do I need to register in advance, or can I buy a ticket at the gate?
Consumer RV shows of this type normally sell tickets at the gate, and the captured pricing is gate admission with a coupon discount rather than a timed-entry ticket. Check the organiser site for any online ticket or fast-entry option, and arrive earlier on Saturday, which is typically the busiest day.
Can I buy an RV at the show, or is it display only?
Dealers bring physical inventory to the fairgrounds and can quote show pricing, discuss trade-in valuation on your current rig and schedule delivery after the show. Ask each dealer for an out-the-door price in writing that includes freight, dealer prep, documentation fees, taxes and any extended service contract.
What should I bring to compare RVs properly?
Bring your tow vehicle's payload sticker (usually on the driver door jamb), its hitch and receiver rating, and the actual loaded weight of your current trailer if you are trading. A tape measure, a notepad or phone notes for floorplan dimensions, and photos of your current set-up make side-by-side comparisons across dealers far quicker.
Is the show useful if I have never owned an RV?
Yes. Walking several classes back to back - campervan, Class C, travel trailer, fifth wheel - is the fastest way to understand what each layout costs you in towing requirements and set-up time. Ask dealers about pre-delivery inspection, walkthrough training and what a first season of maintenance realistically involves.
Are used RVs and trade-ins available at the expo?
Many dealer displays mix new and pre-owned inventory, and consignment sellers often appear alongside franchised dealers. Availability changes year to year, so ask each exhibitor what used stock they brought and request the unit's service history and tyre and roof date codes on any pre-owned coach.
Can I arrange financing or insurance on site?
Finance and insurance providers typically staff consumer RV shows so buyers can get a rate indication and coverage quote in the same visit. Bring a photo ID, proof of income or a pre-approval letter from your own bank, and compare the dealer's rate against your credit union before signing anything.
Where do I park, and what does it cost?
On-site parking is available at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds, with stewards directing traffic to the halls in use. Rates and lot access are set by the venue, so confirm the current charge on arrival and allow extra time on Saturday; the fairgrounds is a large site and walking distances from outer lots can be significant.
What is the easiest way to reach the fairgrounds from out of town?
Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is roughly 9 miles from the fairgrounds, about a 20-25 minute drive via SC-602, with rideshare and rental cars at the terminal. Charlotte Douglas (CLT) is a larger hub roughly 90 miles away if CAE connections do not suit your itinerary. The Comet bus network also serves the fairgrounds area.
Is the expo suitable for children and wheelchair users?
Children are admitted free with a paying adult, and the indoor hall format keeps the visit manageable in cool or wet February weather. For accessibility, ask the organiser in advance about accessible parking, ramp entry and whether specific display units have step-free access, as many RVs have entry steps.
What is the weather like in Columbia in late February?
Expect mild afternoons around 16-18 C (61-65 F) and cold mornings near 2-6 C (36-43 F), with a realistic chance of rain and wind. Dress in layers and bring a rain shell for the walk between parking and the halls; the exhibits themselves are indoors.
Can I bring my dog to the Columbia RV Expo?
Do not assume pets are admitted - service animals are normally allowed, but pet policy for indoor exhibit halls is set by the organiser and venue. Check the organiser website or call ahead before travelling with a dog, and never leave an animal in a parked vehicle.

    Glossary

    1
    Class A motorhome
The largest motorised RV type, built on a bus-style chassis with a flat front, panoramic windshield and typically the highest cargo carrying capacity (CCC) of any motorhome class. Diesel pushers place the engine at the rear for quieter cruising and stronger towing; gas Class A models use a front-mounted engine.
    2
    Class B campervan
A van conversion, usually on a Sprinter, Transit or Promaster chassis, with a raised roof, compact galley and wet bath. It drives like a large van and fits standard parking spaces, but carries less fresh water and cargo than larger classes.
    3
    Class C motorhome
A motorised RV built on a cutaway van or truck chassis with a distinctive cab-over sleeping area. Mid-sized between Class B and Class A, often with a slide-out and a towing rating suited to a small car or boat.
    4
    Travel trailer
A non-motorised towable RV that hitches to a tow vehicle and detaches at the campsite, so the tow vehicle can be used for day trips. Weight ranges from sub-3,000 lb single-axle ultralights to large triple-slide family models.
    5
    Fifth wheel
A towable that overhangs the truck bed and attaches to a horseshoe-shaped kingpin hitch mounted over the rear axle. The overhang adds headroom and creates raised bedroom or front-living layouts, but requires a pickup with the correct bed length and payload.
    6
    Toy hauler
A travel trailer or fifth wheel with a rear garage and ramp door sized for motorcycles, ATVs or side-by-sides. The garage often converts to a bunk room or patio, and garage payload is rated separately from the living area.
    7
    GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating)
The maximum loaded weight a vehicle is rated to carry, including the unit itself, water, propane, cargo and passengers. It is the number to check against a tow vehicle's rating rather than the dry or brochure weight.
    8
Dry weight / unloaded vehicle weight (UVW)
The weight of the RV as built, without water, propane, cargo or dealer-added options such as a second air conditioner or awning. Real towing weight is typically several hundred pounds higher once tanks and gear are loaded.
    9
Payload and cargo carrying capacity (CCC)
The weight allowance left after the unit's unloaded weight is subtracted from its GVWR. It must cover fresh water, propane, waste, food, clothing, people and any dealer-installed accessories.
    10
    Weight-distribution hitch
A hitch system with spring bars that spreads tongue weight across the tow vehicle's front and rear axles and the trailer axle, reducing sag and sway on travel trailers. Often paired with a friction or electronic sway control.
    11
    Slide-out
A section of the RV wall that extends outward at camp to add floor space, usually for a sofa, dinette or bed. Slide count and placement are key floorplan comparisons, and slide toppers are a common add-on purchase.
    12
    Full hookup
A campsite with water, electric and sewer connections at the site, letting you use the RV's systems without moving to a dump station. Partial hookup sites typically provide water and electric only.
    13
    Boondocking / dry camping
Camping without water, electric or sewer hookups. It drives demand for larger fresh and grey tank capacities, solar panels, lithium batteries, inverters and low-draw appliances.
    14
    Pre-delivery inspection (PDI)
The dealer's systems check and walkthrough before handover, covering appliances, slides, plumbing, seals and the electrical system. Buyers should ask when the PDI happens and whether a technician walkthrough is included.
    15
    Out-the-door price
The final amount including unit price, freight, dealer prep, documentation fees, taxes and any added warranty. Ask every dealer for it in writing so show-floor quotes from different vendors compare on the same basis.
    16
    Extended service contract
An optional, separately priced plan covering specified repairs after the manufacturer warranty ends. Coverage exclusions, deductible and whether mobile techs are reimbursed vary widely between providers.
