Germany is a member of the ATA Carnet system, and ATA Carnets are accepted for trade fairs and exhibitions. Exhibitors can use an ATA Carnet to temporarily import goods for display at Blechexpo/Schweisstec 2027 duty-free and tax-free for up to one year. The ATA Carnet is issued by the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Germany and is an international customs document that acts as a 'passport for goods,' eliminating the need for separate customs declarations or security deposits. Over 70 countries are affiliated with the ATA Carnet procedure. As of 1 June 2026, the Carnet ATA is available as a fully digital QR-code-based document. Exhibitors should ensure their Carnet covers trade fair goods and exhibition materials. The German Association of Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) provides an absolute suretyship in respect of foreign customs authorities. For specific guidance, exhibitors should contact their local IHK or the organiser. The fee for issuing an ATA Carnet is approximately €65–105 depending on Chamber membership, plus an ICC fee of approximately €14.28

    Weather

Late October in Stuttgart brings cool autumn weather. Average high temperatures range from 14°C to 16°C (57°F to 61°F) and average lows from 6°C to 7°C (43°F to 45°F). October is one of the drier months, with average precipitation of around 40–55 mm across approximately 10 rain days. The month is known for 'Golden October' — frequent high-pressure weather situations with sunny conditions and colourful autumn foliage. Cool nights can bring temperatures as low as -3°C (26.6°F) in the inner city, though this is rare. Towards the end of the month, the first snow may fall

    Plan for the climate

    Check temperatures and pack accordingly

    Venue connectivity

Messe Stuttgart is exceptionally well connected by public transport. The S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 provide the fastest connection from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (main station) to the 'Flughafen/Messe' stop in approximately 27 minutes, with trains running every 10–15 minutes from about 04:30 to 01:30. The stop is only 200 metres (about 8 minutes' walk) from the trade fair entrance. Taxi ranks and shuttle bus access are located right in front of the trade fair centre and the ICS. Car-sharing providers and rental bikes are available on site. The A8 motorway runs directly alongside the trade fair grounds, with multiple exits. Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Punctuality and formality

German business culture in Baden-Württemberg is formal and hierarchical. Punctuality is essential and considered a reflection of respect for others' time. Being late for a meeting or appointment is a significant breach of etiquette. In business meetings, the senior person typically leads the discussion, and junior colleagues should not take the initiative before the senior participant has spoken. Addressing colleagues by their formal title (Herr/Frau Doktor, etc.) and using 'Sie' rather than 'Du' is expected until the senior person offers the informal form

    Direct communication style

German communication in a business context is famously explicit, direct and sometimes perceived as undiplomatic by other cultures. Germans mean what they say and say what they mean. There is a clear separation between professional and private spheres: at work, Germans are task-oriented, focusing on facts, figures and objectives rather than the persons behind them. Decisions are typically made based on thorough analysis and rule-oriented frameworks. Once an agreement is made, it is expected to be kept

    Business relationships in Stuttgart

Stuttgart is the heart of Germany's machinery and automotive industry, and business relationships here are built on reliability, technical excellence and trust. While initial meetings may feel formal and reserved, German business partners value long-term relationships and expect consistency. Networking often extends beyond the office: the Biergarten is a valued institution for building relationships outside formal settings. At trade fairs, exchanging business cards and following up promptly with relevant technical information is appreciated

    Tipping and payment

In Germany, tipping is customary in restaurants, bars, and for taxis. A tip of 5–10% of the bill is standard when service is good. When paying, it is common to tell the server the total amount you wish to pay (including tip) rather than leaving money on the table. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Stuttgart, though some smaller establishments may prefer cash. The local currency is the Euro (EUR)

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Stuttgart Airport is directly adjacent to Messe Stuttgart, making it the most convenient arrival airport. Direct flights are available from most major European cities and several long-haul destinations. For travellers from North America and Asia, connecting through Frankfurt, Munich, or Istanbul may be necessary. Frankfurt Airport is about 200 km from Stuttgart with direct ICE train connections. Book flights 4–8 weeks in advance for the best fares. Trade fair dates (26–29 October 2027) may see higher demand for flights and accommodation in the Stuttgart area

    Visa

Most non-EU/EEA nationals require a Schengen Visa Type C for business or trade fair attendance in Germany, unless their nationality is on the visa-exempt list. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not need a visa. The visa allows a maximum stay of 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications can be lodged up to six months before the intended date of entry, so for Blechexpo/Schweisstec 2027 (26–29 October 2027), applications can open from approximately late April 2027

    Estimated cost: Not yet confirmed

Processing: Typically 15 calendar days from the date the application is received by the German Embassy. A further 2–3 working days should be allowed for passport return. During peak periods or if documentation is incomplete, processing may take longer. Apply well in advance, ideally 4–6 weeks before travel, and at least 15 days before the scheduled departure

For trade fair exhibitors, an invitation letter from the organiser or a trade fair registration confirmation can support the application. For visitors, a trade fair ticket or exhibitor invitation serves as proof of purpose. Required documents typically include: completed application form, valid passport (with at least two blank pages and validity of at least three months beyond the intended stay), recent biometric photograph, travel medical insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage), proof of accommodation, flight itinerary, proof of funds (bank statements), and for business travellers, an invitation letter from a German-based company or trade fair registration. The German mission responsible for your place of residence handles the application. Foreign exhibitors at German trade fairs who present an official exhibitor pass are exempt from the visa fee. An official invitation letter from the trade fair organiser can be applied for within four months of the event start; for exhibitors, the invitation letter can only be issued once the stand invoice has been paid in full
