    Next edition outlook

    2026-06-04 – 2026-06-06

BEFA FORUM operates on a four-year cycle and is provisionally scheduled to return to Messe Düsseldorf in June 2030. The 2026 edition set records with 272 exhibitors, over 10,700 trade visitors from 40 nations and 27,000 sqm of exhibition space. The established thematic focus on digitalisation, sustainability, artificial intelligence and market consolidation is expected to intensify. The event's role as a hub for international associations including ECN, FIAT-IFTA, EFFS and ICF is likely to expand further. Specific dates for the 2030 edition have not yet been published by the organiser

Continued growth in AI-integrated funeral software and digital case-management tools following their mainstream adoption at the 2026 edition Further expansion of sustainability-focused exhibits including biodegradable materials, electric funeral vehicles and nature-based burial concepts Likely continued consolidation of the German funeral market, with private-equity-backed platforms expanding, which may reshape exhibitor and visitor profiles Possible expansion of international association congresses co-located with the fair, building on the 2026 ECN, FIAT-IFTA, EFFS and ICF participation Continued emphasis on the cemetery technology sector, which grew notably at the 2026 edition

    Impact

    A bigger and stronger platform

The 16th BEFA FORUM, held 26–28 May 2022 at Messe Düsseldorf, was the first full-scale edition after the COVID-19 pandemic and marked a confident return for the international funeral and cemetery sector. Around 230–240 exhibiting companies from Germany and abroad presented products and services across approximately 25,000 sqm. More than 10,000 trade visitors from over 40 countries on all five continents attended, confirming the event's status as one of the world's leading funeral trade fairs. Sustainability and climate neutrality were dominant themes, with exhibitors showing electric funeral vehicles, coffins made from natural materials and urns made from natural or solid wood. The growing dynamism of the funeral sector led organisers to shorten the event cycle from five years to four, setting the stage for the record-breaking 2026 edition

    Audience quality

    High-value decision-makers

BEFA FORUM 2022 attracted more than 10,000 trade visitors from over 40 countries across all five continents, underscoring its international reach. The audience comprised funeral directors, cemetery administrators, stonemasons, florists, municipal representatives and service providers from the funeral and cemetery technology sectors. The high proportion of international visitors and the presence of international associations such as FIAT-IFTA reinforced the event's role as a global meeting point for the industry. Visitors came from across Europe and overseas, with decision-makers attending to evaluate products, services and trends for their businesses and municipalities

    Exhibitor outcomes

    Real business growth

Exhibitors at BEFA FORUM 2022 reported strong interest in sustainable products and digital services. The event provided direct access to decision-makers from funeral homes, cemeteries and municipal authorities across Europe and beyond. The co-location of international association meetings, including FIAT-IFTA, gave exhibitors additional exposure to global industry leaders. The shortening of the event cycle from five to four years signalled confidence in the market and in the fair's return on investment for participants. Exhibitors presenting natural-material coffins, electric vehicles and digital solutions reported particular traction with trade visitors

Europe — Germany (Düsseldorf) with international reach across 40+ visitor nations and 19 exhibitor nations

    Why it matters

BEFA FORUM 2026 is the largest and most international edition in the event's 75-year history, with 272 exhibitors from 19 nations, over 10,700 trade visitors from 40 nations and 27,000 square metres of exhibition space across two fully booked halls. For buyers and exhibitors, it is the central European platform where the industry's structural transformation is visible in one place: the shift from a fragmented, craft-dominated market toward consolidated, digitally enabled and sustainability-driven service provision. The co-location of the European Cremation Network annual meeting, FIAT-IFTA, EFFS and ICF board meetings makes it a rare gathering point for international decision-makers. With cremation rates above 80 percent in Germany, funeral costs rising faster than inflation, and private-equity-backed platforms actively consolidating the market, the fair provides exhibitors with access to significant purchasing power and buyers with a comprehensive view of products, digital tools and regulatory developments. The global death care services market reached USD 148.6 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach USD 201.23 billion by 2030, underscoring the sector's growing economic weight

    Industry trends

Key trends shaping this market and its wider industry.

    01

Personalisation and individualisation of funeral ceremonies

Funeral services across Europe are shifting away from standardised formats toward highly personal ceremonies. Families increasingly request farewells at favourite locations, customised urns, humanist ceremonies centred on the deceased's life story, and digital remembrance. At the BEFA FORUM 2026 in Düsseldorf, the Bundesverband Deutscher Bestatter highlighted that counselling demand has risen sharply and that individual farewell design is now a central theme of the trade fair. NECROEXPO 2026 in Kielce similarly identified the departure from uniform funeral models as the strongest trend of the year, with humanist ceremonies, digital memory management and personalised accessories gaining prominence

    Source
    02

Digitalisation and AI integration in funeral homes

Software with built-in AI functions moved from concept to standard offering at BEFA FORUM 2026. Of 19 congress presentations, five dealt directly with AI and six more with digitalisation. Providers such as Rapid Data, Clever One, SDS Software and newer entrants like Grievy and Trosthelden demonstrated GDPR-compliant AI tools for documentation, correspondence, appointment coordination and client communication. TANEXPO 2026 in Bologna showcased digital management tools, ceremony personalisation platforms and online memorial services in its dedicated Tanexpo Tech space. The DeathTech sector is attracting institutional capital, with German start-ups like Mymoria consolidating fragmented funeral markets

    Source
    03

    Sustainability and green burial options

Environmental responsibility is reshaping end-of-life choices across Europe. Eco-friendly cremation techniques, biodegradable urns, tree burial and natural burial grounds are gaining ground. At BEFA FORUM 2026, Dutch start-up Loop Biotech presented the 'Loop Living Cocoon', a coffin made from local mushroom species and upcycled hemp fibres, while other exhibitors showed urns that grow into trees. The global funeral services market report identifies eco-friendly burial practices and sustainable death care options as key growth drivers, with the market expanding from USD 74.95 billion in 2025 to USD 79.93 billion in 2026

    Source
    04

Cremation dominance and the rise of alternative burial forms

More than 80 percent of the deceased in Germany are now cremated, and the share continues to rise. The BEFA FORUM 2026 dedicated a special exhibition to '150 Years of Cremation in Germany'. Across Europe, the average cremation rate is now between 55 and 60 percent and rising steadily, led by Slovenia at 86.7 percent, Denmark at 86.5 percent and Czechia at 85.6 percent. Even historically Catholic southern Europe is shifting: Italy has risen from under 3 percent cremations in 1995 to almost 39 percent today, while Spain stands at nearly 45 percent. Urn burial in Friedwälder, sea burials and home-keeping of urns reflect changing family expectations and tighter cemetery budgets

    Source
    05

    Market consolidation and private-equity investment

The European funeral market is highly fragmented, with thousands of family-run businesses, many lacking succession plans. Rising death numbers make the market volume predictable and attractive to investors. The European market for funeral services is projected to grow to EUR 20 billion by 2030. Funecap, backed by Charterhouse Capital Partners, has spent approximately EUR 1 billion acquiring funeral centres across Europe and now operates over 100 crematoria in six countries, serving more than 300,000 families per year. In Germany, Berlin-based Mymoria has been acquiring traditional funeral homes since 2021 with EUR 15 million in venture capital. In March 2026, All Seas Capital invested in Sereni, a funeral services platform operating across Belgium, Germany and Poland

    Source
    06

Rising funeral costs and growing pre-planning demand

Funeral costs in Germany frequently range between EUR 6,000 and well over EUR 10,000, with some cases exceeding EUR 20,000. In 2024, prices for funeral services and cemetery fees rose by around 4.6 percent, significantly above general inflation, while the state death grant was abolished in 2004. This cost pressure, combined with smaller family networks, is driving demand for funeral expense insurance and pre-planning products. The first independent rating of 59 such tariffs by Franke und Bornberg found no policy achieving the highest grade. Across Europe, the death care services market grew from USD 138.23 billion in 2025 to USD 148.6 billion in 2026 at a CAGR of 7.5 percent

    Source
    07

Growth of pet funerals as a distinct market segment

Animal funerals are becoming an established part of the funeral industry offering. BEFA FORUM 2026 organisers explicitly highlighted the segment, noting that the bond with pets is increasingly important for many people and so is saying goodbye to them. The topic is now firmly anchored in the trade fair's exhibition programme

    Market news

Latest updates from across the market.

Funeral costs outpace inflation as funeral expense insurance quality lags

Funeral costs in Germany commonly range from EUR 6,000 to over EUR 10,000, with 2024 price increases of around 4.6 percent for funeral services and cemetery fees. The first Franke und Bornberg rating of 59 funeral expense insurance tariffs found none reaching the highest quality grade, highlighting a gap between growing consumer need and product quality

Germany accepts ATA Carnets for temporary duty-free and tax-free import of exhibition goods, trade fair materials, commercial samples and professional equipment. The ATA Carnet, introduced in 1963 and known as a 'passport for goods', allows exhibitors to avoid separate customs declarations or security deposits when bringing exhibits across borders for trade fairs. In Germany, the ATA Carnet system is administered by the Deutsche Industrie- und Handelskammer (DIHK) and issued through local Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK). From 1 June 2026, the ATA Carnet procedure became fully digital in the EU, Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom, with customs clearance conducted via QR code scan using the ICC Carnet app or desktop version. Exhibitors at BEFA FORUM 2026 bringing goods from non-EU countries can apply for a Carnet ATA through their local IHK or equivalent issuing body. The carnet is valid for up to 12 months and covers the show, set-up and dismantling periods

    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

Altbier culture and the 'longest bar in the world'

Düsseldorf's Altstadt (Old Town) is known as the 'longest bar in the world', with over 260 pubs, bars and breweries packed into roughly half a square kilometre. Altbier is the local dark copper-coloured top-fermented ale, served in small 200ml glasses by Köbes (traditionally male servers in blue aprons). A key etiquette point for trade fair visitors: if you want to stop the flow of beer, place your coaster on top of your glass. The server will mark each beer on your coaster with a tick and settle the bill when you are finished

Rhine river networking and local social culture

BEFA FORUM 2026 organisers arranged evening networking formats reflecting local Rhenish culture: a traditional Brauhaus evening at the famous Brauhaus Schumacher and an exclusive Rhine river cruise aboard the MS RheinGalaxie. These formats are consistent with Düsseldorf's identity as a compact Rhine-side city that combines trade fair business with relaxed social culture. The Altstadt and the Rhine promenade are within easy reach of the venue by U-Bahn

    Language and tipping

The official language is German, though English is widely spoken in Düsseldorf, particularly in the trade fair and hospitality sectors. Service charges are typically included in restaurant bills, but it is customary to round up by 5–10% or to the nearest euro as a tip. Taxi drivers also appreciate a small gratuity. The local time is Central European Summer Time (CEST, GMT+2) during June

    Shopping and city layout

Düsseldorf's Königsallee (Kö) is one of Europe's most elegant shopping boulevards, with luxury boutiques, department stores and cafes along a tree-lined canal. The Altstadt and MedienHafen offer contrasting experiences: traditional brewery culture versus modern waterfront dining. The city is compact and easy to navigate by U-Bahn, taxi or on foot between the Hauptbahnhof and the Rhine

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is the closest and most convenient arrival point, located approximately 5 km from Messe Düsseldorf. The airport is well connected to major European hubs with frequent direct flights. For long-haul travellers, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) offers more direct intercontinental options and is connected to Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof by frequent ICE high-speed trains (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) is an alternative for low-cost carriers, with train connections to Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof. Book flights early for June travel, as Düsseldorf hosts multiple trade fairs in the summer months

    Visa

Germany is part of the Schengen area. Whether you need a visa to attend BEFA FORUM 2026 depends on your nationality. Citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland do not require a visa. Nationals of 62 countries outside the EU and Schengen area, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, can enter Germany visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. All other nationalities must obtain a Schengen Type C short-stay business visa before travelling. Trade fair exhibitors and visitors should apply at the German embassy or consulate responsible for their place of residence at least 36 days before travel. The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults, with a reduced fee of EUR 45 for children aged 6–12. Processing typically takes 15 calendar days. Required documents include a valid passport, completed application form, biometric photographs, travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage, proof of accommodation, flight reservations, bank statements, employer letter, and proof of trade fair participation (ticket or exhibitor registration)

    Estimated cost: Not yet confirmed

Processing: Typically 15 calendar days; apply at least 36 days before travel

The Schengen visa fee of EUR 90 is set by EU regulation and applies worldwide. Some countries have visa facilitation agreements with the EU offering reduced fees. Visa-on-arrival is not available for nationalities that require a Schengen visa. Applications must be submitted in person at the German embassy or consulate or through an authorised visa application centre (such as VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS International, depending on the country). Travellers should verify current requirements with the German embassy or consulate in their country of residence, as visa rules and appointment availability can change. Decision

    Visit, exhibit, or skip?

    Should you go?

Answer 8 quick questions to find out whether BEFA FORUM 2026 is a 'Visit', 'Exhibit', or 'Skip' decision for your organisation. Your answers are scored across three outcomes: attending as a trade visitor, exhibiting with a booth, or skipping the event entirely

    QUESTION 1 OF 8

What best describes your organisation's primary activity in the funeral and cemetery sector?

    Decision matrix

Compare participation options side by side to choose the best fit for your objectives.

    visit

You are a funeral or cemetery industry professional who wants to see the full spectrum of products and services in one place, attend free congress sessions on AI, digitalisation and sustainability, and meet international suppliers and association representatives including FIAT-IFTA, ECN, EFFS and ICF

    Best for

Funeral directors, cemetery administrators, municipal burial service managers, stonemasons, florists, and industry professionals seeking to evaluate products, attend congress sessions, and network with peers from over 40 countries

    Min. budget

    $800.00

    Timeline

Book tickets online in advance (EUR 35 for a full trade fair ticket). Book accommodation 3–6 months ahead, as Düsseldorf hotels fill quickly during trade fair periods. Arrange travel and any necessary Schengen visa at least 36 days before departure

    Risks

The event is trade-only; members of the general public are not admitted

Public transport to the venue is not included in the trade fair ticket; a separate VRR ticket is required

June is a peak trade fair month in Düsseldorf, so hotel prices are elevated and availability is limited

    exhibit

You have a product or service that fits the funeral and cemetery sector, an approved marketing budget, and staff available to manage a booth for three days. BEFA FORUM delivers concentrated access to decision-makers from funeral homes, cemeteries and municipalities across Europe and beyond, with strong international association presence that amplifies visibility

    Best for

Manufacturers and suppliers of coffins, urns, funeral vehicles, cemetery technology, stone masonry, digital software, sustainable burial products, and related services seeking direct access to over 10,000 purchasing-power trade visitors from 40 nations

    Min. budget

    $5,000.00

    Timeline

Exhibitor registration deadline was 31 March 2026 with an early-bird rate until 30 November 2025. Booth construction begins two days before the fair (2 June 2026). Full payment is due four weeks before the opening. Plan at least 6–9 months ahead for booth design, logistics and marketing

    Risks

Booth rent is EUR 158–188 per sqm plus EUR 2 per sqm for electricity — a 20 sqm booth costs approximately EUR 3,200–3,800 before stand construction, travel and accommodation

The event is held every four years, so missing the 2026 edition means waiting until 2030

The exhibition space was fully booked in 2026, so late applicants may not secure space

    skip

Your business is outside the funeral and cemetery sector, you have no international expansion plans, or your budget and timeline cannot accommodate the investment. BEFA FORUM is a highly specialised trade fair, and its value is concentrated for industry insiders

    Best for

Professionals outside the funeral, cemetery, burial services or adjacent supplier industries; companies with no plans to enter the German or European market; organisations with budget or timeline constraints that make participation impractical

    Min. budget

    Not yet confirmed

    Timeline

    Not applicable

    Risks

Skipping means missing the largest and most international edition in the event's 75-year history, with co-located ECN, FIAT-IFTA, EFFS and ICF association meetings

The next edition is provisionally scheduled for 2030, so the opportunity gap is four years

Competitors who attend or exhibit will gain visibility and contacts that you will not
