    Cultural notes

Useful information to help you have a smooth and respectful visit.

    Language

German and Swiss German are the everyday languages in Zurich, and business conferences usually run in English. Confirm the session language with the organiser if colleagues work mainly in French, Italian or German.

    Currency and payments

The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and transport ticket machines, though some small kiosks remain cash-only. Prices generally include VAT and service; tipping is not expected beyond rounding up.

    Punctuality and meetings

Punctuality matters in Zurich business settings. Arrive a few minutes early for meetings and conference sessions, shake hands on introduction, and use family names and titles until invited otherwise.

    Sunday and evening hours

Shops are generally closed on Sundays, so buy SIM cards, adapters or supplies on a weekday or at Zurich Airport. Restaurants in the city centre book up on event evenings.

    Transport etiquette

Validate or buy your ZVV ticket before boarding trams and S-Bahn services; inspectors check regularly. Keep phone calls brief in quiet zones and give way to passengers exiting before boarding.

    Late October conditions

Expect cool, foggy mornings around 5-6 C and daytime highs near 13-14 C. A warm mid-layer and a compact waterproof shell make tram and rail transfers comfortable between hotel and venue.

    Practical guides

    Visitor & Exhibitor Essentials

Everything needed to arrive prepared, navigate the event, and make the visit productive.

    Flights

    Destination: ZRH

Book into Zurich Airport (ZRH) where possible: the station beneath the terminals connects to Zurich HB in about 10-12 minutes by S-Bahn. Basel (BSL) can be cheaper on low-cost carriers but adds a bus-plus-train transfer of roughly 1h20-1h30, and Geneva (GVA) adds a 2h45-3h direct train. Aim to land a day before the 26 October start so a delay does not cost you the opening sessions, and compare flexible fares - late October is shoulder season, so prices move with demand. The organiser does not publish delegate airfare rates; compare carriers, rail-and-fly options and Swiss rail supersaver tickets directly.

    Transport

Get to the venue and around the city with these options.

Airport → venue: Primary gateways: Zurich Airport (ZRH): 20-30 min by car or taxi to the city centre; 10-12 min by S-Bahn to Zurich HB; Basel EuroAirport (BSL): About 1h15 by road; roughly 1h20-1h30 by bus 50 to Basel SBB plus IR/IC train to Zurich HB; Geneva Airport (GVA): About 3h by road; 2h45-3h by direct IC train to Zurich HB. Allow road or rail time to Zurich, Switzerland; on-site parking is usually available at major exhibition venues.

Hotel → venue: Precinct hotels near Zurich, Switzerland: Zurich city: THE FLAG Zurich; Zurich Airport: DORMERO Hotel Zurich Airport; Zurich Greencity: MEININGER Hotel Zurich Greencity.

Ride-hail: App-based ride-hail operates in Zurich, including airport pickups from the designated ride-hail zones, with local taxi apps as an alternative. Fares from ZRH to the city centre are typically in the CHF 45-70 band outside surge, versus roughly CHF 60-80 for a metered taxi (approximate, confirm in-app before booking). Availability tightens around event opening and closing times, so pre-book or allow a buffer.

Public transit: Zurich's ZVV network combines S-Bahn, tram, bus and lake boats, and covers both Zurich Airport and the city centre. S-Bahn lines S2, S16 and S24 connect Zurich Flughafen to Zurich HB in about 10-12 minutes; trams then reach most central venues. Single city tickets cost roughly CHF 4.60-5.00 and airport-to-city singles around CHF 6.80-7.20 (approximate, confirm live fares). Buy and validate tickets at machines or in the ZVV app before boarding, and check sbb.ch or zvv.ch for line changes during your stay.

Parking: Central Zurich has very limited street parking, mostly reserved for permit holders, so plan on a multi-storey car park (Parkhaus) near the venue. Expect roughly CHF 3-5 per hour or CHF 25-45 per day in the city centre (approximate; confirm current tariffs). The conference venue's own parking capacity, hall access and pre-booking rules are not published in the material reviewed here - email the organiser before driving in.

    Weather

Plan and pack for the event climate.

The material reviewed here does not state whether slides or proceedings are released to delegates. Ask the organiser at registration whether session recordings or PDFs will be shared, and plan to capture the technical data sheets you need from suppliers on the floor.

    Glossary

    1
    Additive manufacturing (AM)
Building a part layer by layer from a digital model, rather than removing material from a block. The Zurich conference covers both metal and polymer AM routes, from prototyping to serial production.
    2
    Material extrusion (FFF/FDM)
A polymer process that pushes molten filament through a nozzle along a toolpath. Common for jigs, fixtures, functional prototypes and, increasingly, low-volume production parts discussed at industrial AM events.
    3
    Vat photopolymerisation (SLA/DLP)
Curing liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer with a laser or projected light source. Valued for fine feature detail in dental, medical and precision prototyping work.
    4
Powder bed fusion (SLS, SLM/LPBF, EBM)
Fusing polymer or metal powder in a bed using a laser, heat or electron beam. Metal LPBF is central to aerospace, medical implant and tooling conversations at AM conferences.
    5
    Binder jetting
Depositing a liquid binder onto powder layers to form a green part, which is then sintered or infiltrated. Discussed for high-throughput metal and sand-casting applications.
    6
    Directed energy deposition (DED)
Depositing metal powder or wire while melting it with a laser, electron beam or arc. Used for large near-net-shape parts and repair or cladding of existing components.
    7
    Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)
Design rules and methods that exploit AM freedom - consolidated assemblies, conformal cooling channels, lattices - while respecting build orientation, support and tolerance limits.
    8
    Topology optimisation and lattice structures
Software-driven material placement that removes non-load-bearing mass and replaces it with engineered lattice geometry, a recurring theme in AM design and simulation sessions.
    9
    Metal powder feedstock
Gas-atomised or plasma-atomised alloys such as titanium, aluminium, stainless steel, nickel superalloys and copper. Particle size distribution, oxygen content and reusability drive part quality.
    10
Post-processing (HIP, heat treatment, surface finishing)
Steps after the build: hot isostatic pressing to close porosity, heat treatment for microstructure, support removal, machining, polishing and coating. Often the deciding cost factor for serial AM.
    11
    Build chamber and build volume
The usable envelope inside an AM machine. Build volume, nesting strategy and z-height utilisation determine how many parts fit per build and therefore the effective part cost.
